n-stream 3.4 -- unable to find upnp server after app sleeps

Posted by: DavidCT on 26 August 2013

Hi,

I am streaming to my NDX from a Synology nas running both Minimserver and the Synology Media Server.  After inactivity, n-stream goes into the background.  When I reactive n-stream, it can control the playing music and play different titles from the queue.  However, if I try any operation that browses the current upnp server, I get a message saying that the server can not be contacted.  I can still browser the upnp server from the NDX controls.

If I kill n-stream and restart the application, the app sees both my upnp servers.  This problem did not occur until I upgraded n-stream.

Are others having this challenge?  Any tips?

Thanks,

David

Hi no apology necessary - but you are welcome.

Just as a quick note - please, if anyone is experiencing issues and wishes to get support from Naim then please contact us directly - the details are in the sticky at the top of each forum - we do try to keep an eye on the forums as much as possible but it really is impossible to use this as an "official" support channel as there are so many postings.

If you are having issues with streaming audio can you also please ensure that you do check that the issue still exists when using a fully wired network connection between devices too as many issues can be created or compounded by poorly performing WiFi access points.

Cheers

Point taken, I think everyone here with an n-stream issue is using the network wired, as for my latest conundrum, it is a 'wireless' problem, the network key is not required when using a wired system. It could well be I need a better router or server, btw why don't Naim make an audiophile ethernet switch?

And yes, I experience the same issue

i also have a similar problem with server not found, "cant play - track not found" and in general just music stopping after the upgrade.

also to make matters worse, i also replaced a faulty 2TB US (crashed hard drive) with a US SSD with 1.7a.

I pointed the new US to the backup library i had on a synology 212+ and got music and most of the cover art back.  the US now rips direct to the NAS for the music store and also points to a share where all my HD tracks files are.

also upgraded the SU to the new firmware and also all the apple devices nstream apps as well

but since then i cannot play reliably music for long periods (i work from home). either the music drops out with the "cant play - track skipped" message or "no track to play"???  i find the problem much worse when playing playlists with the maximum of 500 tracks.

also, on the previous version of the nstream i could hold down the track selection and just play and the whole music library would play.   now if i do this i run into the limit of 500 tracks, and the selection always starts from "A" alphabetically......not good.  it should at least pick a different random selection at the top level if we must have a 500 track limit.

SU, US and synology NAS are all wired to the same hub, then this is then connected wireless to my router (different) location.  using iphone5, 4s, 3 and ipad 3rd gen and 2nd gen.

just as an aside, i have been running a test all day today with NOT selecting the US as the server from my SU and Nstream and running via the standard synology music server and had not a single drop out of problem playing music from there....

please help, way too much money for this not to be bullet proof......

Also i wanted to add, when using the US i cannot get more than about 20-50 tracks to play before i get this music stopping, cant play type of scenario.

Also, thanks to all the great help from the forum and also from tech support, i know yuo guys will smash the problem.

"This" is not what one expects from  "Naim" kit.  I was thinking of buying an XPS2 to go with the NDX now I'm not so sure.

Thanks for the info all, I think we are making progress tracking this one down. RE gapless issue that was reported, yes it is being looked into.

I can also report experiencing the issue of nStream not seeing my Synology UPNP server after the most recent nServe update. Killing the app and restarting it cures the problem most of the time, but it's still more glitchy than before. Thanks.

Glad that I am not the only one experiencing this "no server" issue. Sometimes n-stream can't even find the upnp servers while in compatibility mode

I am using:

NDS on 3.21.001

n-stream on 3.4.7079

iOS 6.1.3 on a latest ipad retina

Synology DS412+ running on DSM4.2 and Synology's media server

Netgear wireless router FVS318N and switch GS108E; all using latest firmware available

After deleting and reinstalling nStream, I still see 'no server' sometimes, but just wait 2-3 seconds and everything will spring back to life without having to kill and restart the app. Problem solved I'd say.

I think that is normal behavior.  On my iPhone, when the system has been dormant, I sometimes get the 'no server' message the first time I try to fire up nStream.  I just try again, and then it works.  My guess is that there is a fair bit of communication going on to get that connection, and when servers and clients have been dormant they don't wake up immediately.

Before I reinstalled nStream, like others reported here, the only way to wake up the server was to kill and restart the app. I also use AirAV app (for playback on iPad) and Pioneer app and these have no problem connecting to the server ever. There was definitely something wrong with the nStream/server combo before.

Is there a timeline on when we can expect an update to the 'n-Stream on iPad' application, as this issue is quite annoying?

ND5-XS on 3.21

n-Stream on 3.4

iOS 6.1.3 on iPad Mini

ReadyNAS Duo running RAIDiator 4.1.13[T1] & TwonkyMedia 6.0.38 (for the Album Artwork fix)

Unfortunately that did not work for me, since solving a Qute wireless disconnect problem the system I have seemed stable, but then today it was 'No Servers' on both the wired and wireless Naim streamers, and no amount of waiting around, cache clearing or other shenanigans sorted it other than to kill the app and start over... until the next time (cue deep manic laughter!)

i also get "track not played" or "no track to play"

i saw yours HDD crash. How does it happen ? Is the SSD better ?

Hello Chaps. There is obviously something seriously wrong with n-Stream update 3.4 . Perhaps if one of the previous versions that actually worked was posted on the Naim website we could use that until Naim gets 3.4 to work. It would also be nice if Naim kept us up to date with n-Stream 3.4 repair  progress.

Posted on: 09 September 2013 by Simon-in-Suffolk

This is curious, as I have no issue with Nstream 3.4 at all. In fact thus far it has been the most stable and reliable versionto date in terms of discovery and sleep recovery and crashing.

But I use iOS 5.1.1 and I wonder if the issue is with bugs with the later Apple  iOS versions interacting with some of the capability in the app...

Simon

Unfortunately that didn't work for me. I've tried the uninstall-and-reinstall approach, kill-and-restart approach and both didn't work. The only method works is shut down the ipad and restart.

i restarted my router for other reasons today, and n-stream got back to function!

Hi Guys,

From what I've been told it looks like there's possibly an issue with the iOS device keeping open the network connection to apps when they are allowed to go to sleep and not restoring them correctly when the app wakes ... Tom is working on a workaround for this and hopefully that can be incorporated in the next release.

Thanks

It's great to hear that Naim are working on the problem, but when are we likely to see the next release ? I just bought my NDX and I can't use it properly.  Couldn't you just take the code from the last version of n-Stream that actually worked and insert it in to the newer version ?

The simple answer is "No" - it doesn't "work" like that.

It isn't feasible to just roll out small updates due to the way that the AppStore works (effectively we release to Apple and they place it on the store anything up to two weeks later).

The code will be released when the developers are happy with it and Apple approves it.

Cheers

New Naim owner hear, a Superuniti with firmware 3.17.

Everything operating as it should, downloaded N-Stream on Saturday and working fine until yesterday and now it's reporting the glitches mentioned here with server not found etc.

Still works fine from remote.

Glitches started when I edited some of the music files on the server.

Posted on: 21 September 2013 by quisquose

After a few days of using the app my observation is that it is not the app sleeping that causes the server to disappear, but rather when the server hard drive sleeps that this happens. The n-Stream app is unable to kick start the hard drive, whilst the remote and Superuniti are.

So if I pick up the iPhone to play some music and can't find the server, I pick up the remote to find it. I immediately hear the faint noise of the hard drive kicking into action, and it then appears on my n-Stream app.
