iPad mini vs iPod Touch for n-stream

Posted by: pixies on 27 August 2013

Ok I have finally accepted that n-stream for Android is some way off or might not even happen.  So with this in mind I may buy either of the above as my control for n-stream. (Bubble and Synology control apps are just not working out for me!).

I can see pros and cons for both.  One is larger and will be easier to view content but more expensive (£270). The other is smaller (Touch 5th edition), more convenient to hold and is cheaper (£180).  Cost difference of £90 is perhaps not an issue over the lifetime of use.

Any users wish to share their thoughts on which would be better long term.  Does n-stream via an iPad mini offer a different /better user experience to the iPod Touch?

Hi,

I have at present a qute, ndx and nd5xs on home dem all with current software.as a household I am lucky to have a ipad(my sons) and my phone is iPhone 4.

I have downloaded the app n-stream 3.4 to both the iPad and iPhone.in operational terms they both look and work identical to each other with n-stream.as you point out the main difference will be the size difference.i have been playing around with the n-stream app with the info pages supported by rovi.in myI opinion I love this feature.

In short both work well. How much will you use rovi or are you just using to control the music.how good is your eyesight(lol).

If I was in your position I would opt for the larger of the 2.dont forget you can use the iPad/touch for a lot more than controlling your music.

I don't want to spend your money but you could also get a iPad.try and borrow one and give it a go you will not be disappointed.

Seconding Scooot - I have Nstream on my iPhone 5 and iPad mini and while it is great and usable on the smaller screen, it is a pleasure to use on the iPad.

I use iPad and iPod Touch equally. Extra size of the iPad is good for viewing but also takes up space in the lounge so it's pros and cons. Both are fine. I bought the Touch on eBay for around £100 - unused, 8gb, last generation. Works perfectly.

We have a touch, iPhone, mini & iPad and use them all! G

over the years i collected a few ipods, ipads and iphones.

with regards to n-stream i would go for the ipad mini - just the perfect size when used as a remote. the app does not really use the retina display of the bigger ipad but does offer a cover by cover view option (like a grid) that the touch misses. my favorite selection tool.

in a nutshell: +1 for the ipad mini

Hi Lorenz. That's a good point and a key difference that may make the iPad the right choice. I don't have access to both for a side by side comparison so this is why the forum is so useful.

I have iPhone 4 and iPad. The iPhone is much too small so I hardly use it. The iPad is a bit too big and heavy as a remote handset, but a better size than mini iPad for web surfing and reading rovi info while listening to music.

I use an iPad and IPhone5 for nStream.

Both work well. The iPad's larger display has its advantages. The iPhone5, however, wins on form factor as it is more the size of a remote which is, after all, what nStream is all about.

As a tip, if you are veering towards an iPad Mini then wait a few weeks. The new model should be out in September and will be the same price - so you could buy that or, perhaps, get a discount on the present model.

Thanks Jon.  I am aware of the possible new iPad mini, but I also have a nice £50 voucher to use at PC World during first weeks of September hence all the questions. I will keep an eye on developments.

I have used an Ipod for n-Stream for some time, avoiding the Ipad on the basis that the N-stream would operate identically and would just appear larger. However I recently borrowed an iPad, and the n-stream app is far better presenting the rovi information in the form of a booklet with page turn, whereas on the Ipod its more spreadeagled. Definitely go for the iPad although the Mini probably adopts  the booklet style navigation as well.

Hi there,

just a quick comparison of iPod touch and iPad mini - side by side...

I am a happy Android user but bought the iPad mini as an N-stream controller.

I love reading kindle on the ipad and then switching back to n-stream, when lounging or lying in bed.

Having upgraded my hi-fi streaming this month - replacing the SB Touch with the NDX - I'm on a steep learning curve.

We've owned an iPad for more than a year and have been using it (n-Stream App.3.6.7479) - initially with Twonky and now MinimServer (music library: FLAC on QNAP NAS - wired via a Virgin NeatGear Router) - some problems re: losing the server (regularly!) but it works.

To expand access I've ordered a new 5th Gen iPod (due this week) and I've just bought an old 2nd Gen iPod on eBay.  It runs n-Stream App.3.1 and works well, probably slightly better with Twonky than MinimServer (less crashes), but ...

... I can't use both iPad and iPod concurrently.  Using the one voids use of the other.

Annoying!  Is this a known issue (perhaps due to old software on the iPod) or some other matter which I could resolve if pointed in the right direction?

Cheers,

Mitch

Like you, I am waiting in vain for n-Stream for Android but Naim seem to have firmly joined the Apple sect and once in, like the Scientologists, getting out is hard.

Namote offers a controller; it's on Google Play.  Like you, I didn't like Bubble and I found it a bit flaky.  I use UpNPlay (NOT UPnPlayer - different and not as good) which work well together on my Galaxy 4. UPnPlay does take a bit of getting used to, but it's brilliant for selecting classical music movements; uncross the ones you don't want

My Iphone3GS, (bought from my daughter so she could afford a new one!!)  is now a paper weight which I think is it's true level.

Linn's Kinsky for Android worked well for me after having issues with Bubble.

I have both an iPhone and iPad mini, even though I have the n-stream app installed on both, I don't use it often on the iPhone. The screen size is an issue and the lack of Grid view (as others have mentioned) is what keeps me from using it on the iPhone.

I would look at a refurbished iPad mini from the online Apple store. Good as a new one, but you can get considerable savings.

But does UpNPlay offer gapless playback with naim streamers? This is one of the important features in BubbleUPnP for me.
