A photo taken yesterday in the west of Herefordshire:

What do you think it is?

Sorry George, no image to be seen. Just a blue question mark.

Yes, the photobucket is not allowing me to link!

Stupid system that used to work before they made it "more advanced!"

Sorry. Will try some more.

If you click on the image it will offer the chance to view it larger. It is not a big file though.

So start guessing, please.

George,

Looking at the "slit" near the top, is it a WW2 pill box?

Correct first time!

It is in the overgrown part of the lower garden [once a very steep orchard] at Knapp Farm, Bridge Sollars.

It is high above the bridge over the River Wye.

There used to be a massive two inch diametre stump in the lawn of high grade steel - a big gun mount. That river crossing was considered quite important in summer 1940.

I used to visit this place as a child in the early '70s. My Aunt and Uncle lived there till 1999. We used to play in the pill box as guess what? Germans and British!

We used to sort out the winners with friendly wrestling!

Nobody got badly hurt!

I've seen quite a few WW2 pill boxes built in various river estuaries near the coast.

The one that springs to mind is on the Cuckmere river estuary near the Seven Sisters country park.

I didn't live on the coast but I remember playing in many derelict air raid shelters as a child.

I also remember seeing quite a few war trophies such  hand grenades (disarmed), tin helmets, gas masks etc.  in old mens allotment sheds.

Happy days. I am not sure children have so much fun outdoors these days! A few cuts and bruises never did anyone any harm along the way!
