Hi-Line!!!

Posted by: Wadkri on 06 September 2013

After reading posts from forum members being a bit hesitant and not fully positive to the impact of a Hi-Line in their Naim systems, me to was a bit skeptic when I borrowed one for a home test from my local Naim dealer.

I used to have an NDX connected to a 202/200 with a NAPSC and an external PSU connected to the 202 and I never really fell in love with that system, so I kept the ndx and upgraded the amp section to a 282/SC/250.2 combo. Great move even if it was costly. Quite clearly the source is the limit in this set up and I don’t have room for another black box (XPS or 555) in the present rack so the Hi-Line felt like a natural next step.

What can I say? It is the icing of the cake. The Hi-Line takes the best out of your source. It had a great imapct on PRAT, base and 3D feeling to the sound. I decided to eat noodles for the rest of the month after 30 min of listening since I refuse to return the Hi-Line . It is just jaw-dropping great! Try it if you can!

Wadkri, it's good isn't it. I love the Hiline between my NDAC/555PS and my 282/HCDR/250. The Lavander lead is good, but I enjoy the extra detail, clarity and the space around the sounds in the mids and highs as well as that deep deep tight bass and imaging the Hiline gives.

If you were alluding to my comments on the other thread I was talking about preferring the Lavender over the Hiline on the analogue side of my system. I did say the 5-5 pin Hiline makes for a very big improvement on the digital side.

Enjoy

My Hi-Line experience a few years ago (from a CDS2 into an 82):

I was feeling a little nauseous about the dent in my bank balance, until I sat down and listened, then listened some more... for a total of 10 hours one Saturday, barely stopping for bathroom breaks. I remember marvelling at how a brush stroke on a cymbal had resolved from a fairly convincing wash into a stroke where I could virtually hear each metal strand of the brush hitting the cymbal. But it was (and is) so much more than the detail.

If music be the food of love, play on ; give me excess of noodles !

Similar here. It's important to keep it in perspective. Without one, you've still got a top flight system but if circumstances allow, then why wouldn't you? Subject to audition.

Congratulations and have fun.

My only regret is that I waited so long to put a HiLine between my nDAC and 282, which I did last spring.  I had always thought it too expensive, but the improvement per cost is at least in line with box upgrades.  I have been very pleased.  It improved all the "HiFi" stuff, but also the Naim PRaT and musical communication.  It gets the sound a bit closer to a convincing depiction of live music.

Enjoy!

Hi wadkri, you beat me too it.

I was going to write a little review of the HiLine as I have been using one since April, every time I consider on writing it I think I shall just pop the lavender back in first so that I get a truly "now" impression.

I think Simon sums it up very well with those three words, detail, clarity and space.

In an audition, I preferred the addition of a hiline to the addition of a 555Psu on a Ndx/supernait/hicapdr

Both the digital and analogue ends of my system are HiLined. I agree here that HiLine is a worthy addition to my CD listening; a no brainer.  I'm wondering what the HiLine has done to my vinyl side. All the hifi aspects sort out well on the analogue end when taken individually (bass tightens, grit to voices, cymbals shimmer), but is there a loss of engagement, musicality?

Due to travels for work, I've heard my system only on brief occasions this summer. I'm just not certain the vinyl sounds as engaging as it had before the HiLine addition. At the time I added the HiLine to my vinyl end, I also powered my Stageline through a FCXS rather than via the Nait XS, as it had previously been.

To me, the HiLine is the only Naim component I am actually able to insert and forget about.

Forgive my ignorance but is the HiLine a more expensive version of the DC1 or are they different cables for different functions?

I think I have got (I'll have to check) a DC1 from my HDX to my DAC and then something else (probably just whatever came in the DAC box) from the DAC to my Nait XS.  Then something else (again whatever came in the box) from my XPS to the DAC and from my HiCap to the Nait XS.

Would the HiLine replace the DC1, or whatever's between the DAC and the Nait XS, or both?

No, hiline is not a replacement for DC1.

Hiline links your DAC to the nait XS.

Can someone please confirm which Hiline I will need to connect a DAC to a Nit XS.  Is it 5 pin to 5 pin?

Yes it is.
