Unitiserve reliability
Posted by: Fitz55 on 10 September 2013
I have a unitiserve ssd with ndac. It has just gone back to the dealer for the third time because it will not rip. Serve accepts the cd but then there is no more activity and I have to eject using the paper clip.
This is a problem at the moment and I am only 20 minutes from the dealer. I am planning to move to a remote part of the country at least a days travel from the nearest dealer. has anybody else had problems with serve reliability. I am not confident that the system will remain reliable.
Same problem here (1TB HDD). My unit has been back to the shop twice after the ripping function went on strike. It's happened again, and the distributor will replace the unit. I was told that Naim is well aware of the probem and are working on a permanent solution, but no details provided on what that might be.

One other thing that may be of use. Try rebuilding the internal database (using DTC), as over time, as it accumulates data, that can apparently slow down the ripping to the point where it looks like ripping has failed, when in fact the unit is still working. In my case, it did speed up ripping... for a while.
Rebuilding the database will erase playlists however.

No problems with mine. 1TB model recently upgraded to 2TB.

Mine started as a 1TB and was upgraded to 2TB. I've only had one instance of a cd going in and just sitting there unripped (the recently released remastered Brothers in Arms). I powered it down, restarted it, the disc was spit out, and ripped fine the second time.
Sorry to hear some of you are having issues.
I've ripped over 1,900 discs over the past few weeks. It's nearly killed me, but the UnitiServe seems ok. I've encountered about 10 discs that simply will not rip. it thinks for a while, then spits them out. Weird.
@nudgerwilliams - that was just Naim quality control
Vortexbox powered Togserve 2 years no problems - nada - nothing but if it does go wrong - backup is rock solid.
There that should just about jinx it.

Oldish Dell laptop has done approx. 600 CDs. What killed it was a spilled glas of wine ...
My humble HP PC has ripped about 1700 CDs, not one issue. My biggest issue is some new release CDs dont have downloadable metadata yet, but if find MP3tag a great programme for fixing rare metadata, seemingly by fetching the meta data from Amazon.de....
My unitiserve has ripped just over 3,000 with 100% success. Just missing metadata on around 25 of them.

Gee I am feeling "library envy" with only just less than 900 cd's total on my home server.
I worry about what I want to listen to getting a bit 'lost' among what I'd not be likely to listen to, so I typically don't add cd's just because I can. But my library is still growing. I read a recent thread on another board on 'best albums of the 21st century' and that exposed me to some artists and titles that I'd not paid attention to. Finding something new that I like is always a pleasure.
I find Spotify is a great way of discovering new artists.

Thinking some more about reliability, the UnitiServe has been unfailingly reliable in its most important function: providing a level of playback that is constantly refined, engaging, goosebump and trance inducing.
I've not felt any stirrings of desire to move to another computer source, nor to go back to a CD player even though I've dallied with laptop playback through USB DACs (not heard the V1 yet).
The ripping function is certainly practical, but secondary even though it provides "better-than-bit-perfect CD ripping" according to a US website. I can live with its eccentricities.
So, is it reliable? Very much.

My u-Serve is approaching a year old now, and as one would expect from a devise costing this much, (stroking wood gently), it has proven robust and reliable. I have had two jams in 600 rips, but the jams are caused by the cd, in my experience, as these were proving very reluctant to rip causing no end of vigorous whirring for 20 mins by the u-Serve. Howerver, not one cd has eluded that bit perfect ripper yet, I get the impression it will pursue the rip until the 5 year warranty expires then decide to die...we shall see.
By the way, does anybody know which hard drive (model) the u-Serve is using?
Jason.
Thank you Jason. I trust that Norway is treating you well ; you must be essentially fluent by now. I'm envious.
My new 2 TB UnitiServe is merrily ripping away, but the transfer of albums from the old one is not without hiccups. Fortunately, Manu is guiding me expertly and all should be sorted soon. The "Downloads" folder is new to me and I'm looking forward to trying out some of the high resolution music that Harry has so compellingly described in the Wobbly Preamp thread.
I don't know the model of hard drive used, perhaps Naim technical support can help out.

Yep, Norway treats everybody very well...min norske er ikke sa bra når...due to a combination of laziness on my part and a prevalence of excellent English speakers here.
Hmmm, the problem I have at the moment is a lack of wired streaming, hense my lack of HiRes aquisitions...hope to be sorted in the near future though.
Happy ripping.
Jason.
That was my experience living there as an ex-pat Brit in the early 90s. Nice to know that hasn't changed.
I think that should read: "Min norsk er ikke så bra nå." Even after 2 decades, I still remember some of what I learned in Norwegian class.
Heia Norge!

Well spottedPaul.

Had problems with my userve to the point I am giving up on it. I am on my third power supply unit, it was back at naim recently for repair, I had it back for a week and it started shutting itself down for no reason I can find and now refuses to rip anything. So I am trading it in for a streamer and will use my nas as a music store. I must say I expected a more robust piece of kit for 2k.

Hi Maze,
Sorry to hear about this ongoing problem. As far as I can remember you purchased your first unit about the same time as I, about a year ago? And three units in one year is not acceptable for sure.
I guess there comes a time when one has to give up and try a different approach.
what have Naim said on the matter?
Jason.
Well okay then, I needn't worry about my 'Serve ripping my 300 discs. The size of some of your libraries is astonishing!
Hi Jason, I purchased my userve approx two years, I have to say it does not seem that long ago. My problems really started after attempting the 1.7 upgrade and it went back to naim for repair, at the same time I decided to go for the 2tb upgrade as my userve was the original 1tb version. I had it back for a week and it started shutting down for no reason and would not rip. However prior to this I had a few problems with the power supply and now on my third.
When userve works its a nice experience, but I now have to ask myself do I want this anymore as my nas works fine as a player so I will move over to streaming.
regards.
That's too bad, Maze. But I agree and I'd lose patience too after multiple trips to the hospital don't make the patient better.
Were you using the Naim factory to do the upgrade to 2tb and subsequent repair work?
