I tell you what, it's not bloody James "Just won the Mercury for some unknown reason" Blake.
Kev, judging by the Mercury's history this might just be our blessing and he'll be gone within 6 months.

Can't say I've listened to the entire album, but probably heard most of it, my son plays it a lot. I quite like it, he sounds like a watered down version of Anthony and the Johnsons. As brilliant as Anthony and the Johnsons is/are, watering down isn't a bad idea.
Perhaps he appeals to the younger listener.

Re: water down. Love A&J and like my whisky neat.
Re: younger listener. Are you calling me old at 54? Wanna step outside?
Made me laugh...
Only 54, that's younger than me. Don't know about step outside, I'd need to limp outside.
I also like Anthony and the Johnsons music, strange thing is, I don't know why.

Your problem is that you have good taste in music.
A&J attracted the attention and collaborated with the late Lou Reed and his wife, the ever endearing Laurie Anderson.
I bow to you and your taste in music sir!
Came to my attention when I saw a Crazy Horse dancer, dancing to one one his songs.

Contains nudity, but, it's in the best possible taste.
His lyrics are a bit dark, as is the photo on the cover of "I am a bird now"
Sorry even the sight of an almost naked lady can't make me listen to that. It really makes one wonder what some record executives think? That's a really strange voice we must be able make money with it.
As you might deduce I don't like A&J watered down or otherwise. Laura Marling's album is better, IMO of course.

Howard,
LM and A&J are two very disctinctive styles. I like LM earlier albums but not so keen on her "award winning" offering. I do agree with Ewe's taking on LM's latest release. At the end on the day it's all a question of taste.

Great point re Antony Hegarty. My wife and I find his music at times utterly mesmerising but he's totally unlike what we'd normally listen to. In fact he's just different to everyone really. I think he is a genuine artist, of great integrity as well as talent. I suspect he'd be fantastic to hear live-and I don't say that about many performers.
At the other end of the vocal ability scale we are off to see Billy Bragg in a month or so. There's a contrast!

What a great thread this is. Plenty of good suggestions that led to some purchases from my side. Thanks !
Another vote for "Carmen Gomes Inc - Thousand Shades of Blue". I can really recommend this album from the Dutch vocal jazz singer Carmen Gomez. Some covers combined with own songs. Awesome voices and she has this specific timing one rarely sees with a Jazz singer. Superb sound quality too
Jonathan Wilson is a big favourite with me, his older album Gentle Spirit and his new album just released Fanfare.
Here's my updated list:
- The Next Day/David Bowie
- Tales of Us/Goldfrapp
- AM/Arctic Monkeys
- Places of Worship/Arve Henrickson
- All for the Dream/Sara Lowes
- Nubian Swimtrip/Tonbruket
- Tomorrow's Harvest/Boards of Canada
- Push the Sky Away/Nick Cave
- Miles Davis: The Bootleg Series Vol.2
- On Air/The Beatles
These New Puritans - Field Of Reeds, could be my Best Of...
Words & Sounds - http://drownedinsound.com/rele...7685/reviews/4146504
The vinyl is a true work of art, with it's textured finish. It's a double LP on 3 sides, with the 4th etched.
Like what I've heard so far, Denis.

Hi Denis.
I'm very interested in this. Had a look on Amazon but not sure if they are selling the textured finish/ etched vinyl were did you order from?
Graham
I ordered the vinyl direct from the TNP website. It's possible that Amazon is the same, but my money went direct to the group. I think the album is mesmerising.
These New Puritans - Field Of Reeds, [...]
I absolutely have to hear this.
Saw them live a couple of months ago: the utmost disaster. Half of their gear had not arrived so they were completely pissed off, couldn't care less about playing the gig, called it a day after 45 minutes and ran away without even saying goodbye.
I thought they were true to their name: not the faintest trace of pleasure in the music I heard.
Game over. Try again.

John Abercrombie. Within a song. Very good, quite mellow interpretation of jazz standards

Colin, try his 2013 album release 39 Steps. It's fabulous,
Hi you all,
I am a new member of the forum but I have been a passive spectator for years.
I have been listening and in some cases downloading a big part of the exellent suggestions for best album of 2013.
I thought Monoszwezi was intereresting and a beutifull mix of European jazz and African music,
Goldfrap also intrigued me ...
but the album that really blew me away was Carmen Gomes Inc.'s ''Thousand Shades of Blue''.
The Sound of that album is simply the best I have heard so far,so natural and so well played, faboulus musicians.
I have been doing some internet research into the label,Sound Liaison, and I understand from different reviews and from studying their web site, that what they do is old fashioned minimalistic aproach to the use of microphones and letting the musicians play together in one room at the same time without headphones, and in so doing, creating the balance that we hear on the recording.
It's actually a very old fashioned way of recording, and the sound is maybe best described as old fashioned meets modern technology, but that is somehow so refreshing!
So my vote goes to Carmen Gomes Inc.''Thousand Shades of Blue''
