iPhone 5S - Anyone Upgrading?
Posted by: Tony2011 on 13 September 2013
Last time I upgraded my iPhone was from the 3S to the 5, skipping the 4 and 4S altogether. Did not find anything with the latest "model" that would make me fork out the extra cash. Anyone thinking of upgrading?
I wonder why you've posted this in the Streaming Audio section? But, as it happens, no, I'll stick within my 4 a little longer, too expensive to upgrade and not enough new benefits.

Oooops. Apologies. I'll politely ask Richad to move it to teh Padded Cell.
Topic moved for you Tony.
Your're a star Richard!

I went from the 3 to the 5. I won't be changing to the 5S - I will wait for the 6 which presumably will have 4G.
what's not to like?

I skip every other model. I had the original, then the 3GS, now the 4S. I plan to upgrade to the 5S. It will be a low cost upgrade. $199 for the new one, and I'll sell my 4S for $125-$150.
As a matter of interest, how do you get one for $199? They're about £550 here - which is about $900!
Still prefer the design and proportions of the 4S so I'm hoping to keep that for a long time. G
Not one minute later, I realised that my phone was not on the table and the girl was gone into the inky black Oslo night. This type of theft is a common occurance every year and sometimes I can be a little to relaxed about these type of things.
Anyway, I could have replaced the 4S with the 5, but frankly the extra cost and the bigger size just put me off. The 4S size is as big as I want to go, there is an optimum size point that I will not go beyond based on practical reasons, In fact, before this new cheaper iPhone was released friends and I were suggesting that they should produce a smaller IPhone.
So I replaced the 4S with another and skipped the 5. It is amazing how some people find that choice a little surprising, as though you are mentally deficient. Yet, when I watch all those people cueing outside Apple stores, and rushing in doing 'high fives' to the recently employed Apple staff who are chearing and whooping like fools, then I too wonder who is mentally deficient.
Jason.
Since I just got 5, I'll stick with it (and hopefully will keep my finger in case of robbery). It is interesting when the first incidence of the cut-off finger for unlocking the fingerprint detector is reported.
The 5s does have 4G support from what I have read, and Vodafone has a 4g package for it

In the U.S. the cost of iPhones are subsidized by the mobile providers, but you commit to a 2 year contract. I imagine our monthly fees are higher too. I pay $140/month for two iPhones with unlimited texts and minutes, sharing a 2GB/month data plan. TMobile does not subsidize cost. so In that case you pay $649-849.
Just this morning I upgraded my wife's Blackberry to an iPhone 5 for the same monthly plan of unlimited calls, texts and internet use for £36 pcm and 4G is included. I'm still on 3G! I only had to pay £19.99 for the phone. I've spent the last hour setting it up.
I have T-Mobile in the USA. You buy your phone outright - I pay about $40 a month for unlimited phone/text and 500MB of data. I hardly use even 150MB data - since I used WiFi both at home and work.
Second phone is $30, third and fourth phones are $10 each. - So $100 for 4 phones.
The subsidy part is hogwash - it's a way to force upgrade you - if you don't, you're still paying some $$ towards a phone that is already paid for. I just hate that approach on principal.
I don't like the subsidy part either, but it works for me. I don't have a land line phone. I use Verizon, and I know that I can get a signal just about anywhere, including my home. That is certainly not the case with AT&T. I had to maintain a landline with AT&T because the mobile service is so terrible. I don't know about T-Mobile, but don't want to go to the expense and find out it doesn't work well.
But it doesn't matter. I like getting a new iPhone every two years anyway.
Not sure. Would like to see the camera tested against other compact digital offerings to get a sense of how good it is beyond the marketing. They are not chasing megapixels but increasing the size of the sensor so that is promising.
Rest of it is a bit ho-hum. People talk about apps as if you're missing a limb without them but rarely use them.
Texting is better with a physical keyboard.
Re music, I think a Sansa Clip + and 64GB card can be had for about £60.
Hmmm, comes down to that camera IMO.
Oh yes, we have plenty of two year subsidy deals too. Typically about £40 per month, say $60 inc tax. But I'm now on a dirt cheap network deal at £8.50, say $13 per month with 500 mins, unlimited texts and a gig of data. Which is ample. I think I'll keep my 4 for one more round.

I am paying £10 a month more than you, plus I have unlimited internet with 4G, which works out at £240 over 2 years. How much was your iPhone5? In addition my contracts are a tax deductible business expense.

Jason.
I had a similar expereince in Toulouse a couple of years ago, but I managed to push the girl's arm away quickly enough once I realised what she was up to. Maybe we should both upgrade to phones small enough to keep in our pockets .
I am increasingly leaving the phone at home, though. I find I carry one less and less often. I prefer to talk with the people I am actually with, rather than with the ones that aren't there.
Back on topic. iPhone 4S here. No plans to upgrade.
So true.
I switched from Blacberry to an iPhone 4S a couple of years ago, partly because nStream (still!) only runs on Apple and though I quite liked it, it there were a few things about it that drove me nuts. So I recently upgraded...to a Blackberry Z10. Love it and won't be going back to Apple. Gave the 4S to my son in exchange for his iTouch which I use to run nStream.
Although Blackberry have been hoping the Z10 will bring back some of the market share they have lost I heard on the news today they are shedding loads of jobs. I used to be a Blackberry user but the last Bold 'phone I had was a pain and I bought an iPhone5 to replace it. I find the iPhone5 much more useful but I have no experience of the Z10 which came out just after. I think Blackberry are likely to go the same way as Nokia, especially with the competition from Samsung and others.
I can't wait until I retire when I will ceremonially dump the mobile. Unfortunately it's a necessary evil at the moment. The only respite I have is when I'm holiday.

My iPhone was free. Got it from work, to beta-test the software I'm working on.
