iPhone 5S - Anyone Upgrading?
Posted by: Tony2011 on 13 September 2013
Last time I upgraded my iPhone was from the 3S to the 5, skipping the 4 and 4S altogether. Did not find anything with the latest "model" that would make me fork out the extra cash. Anyone thinking of upgrading?
I had a similar expereince in Toulouse a couple of years ago, but I managed to push the girl's arm away quickly enough once I realised what she was up to. Maybe we should both upgrade to phones small enough to keep in our pockets .
Similar experience in Milan about 15 years ago..
I switched from Blacberry to an iPhone 4S a couple of years ago, partly because nStream (still!) only runs on Apple and though I quite liked it, it there were a few things about it that drove me nuts. So I recently upgraded...to a Blackberry Z10. Love it and won't be going back to Apple. Gave the 4S to my son in exchange for his iTouch which I use to run nStream.

There are several things I prefer about the Z10, but to name a few: it will run up to four aps at the same time and switching between functions is much smoother. Suffering from absent-mindedness, I really rely on the calendar and the reminder system in the iPhone is close to useless. But by far the biggest improvement is the touch screen typing and the predictive text which is so good that more than half the time I am not typing words but "swiping" them up into the text - much faster. (Love demonstrating this to my friends who have iPhones ). The predictive text in the iPhone is primitive by comparison and the Android phones i've tried are not nearly as good. I've had it for around 6 months now and never a glitch - the new operating system is very solid.
It's a shame that, like Sony Beta, sometimes the better product doesn't win out. Blackberry may well go down the same road as Nokia but the technology behind the phone will be snapped up and used in future devices.
I went to a Verizon near me at lunchtime to see if I could upgrade my iPhone quickly. That was a good experience. The wait was short, maybe 15 min. and they gave me a $200 no-hassle credit on my 2 yr. old 4S towards the new one (Space Gray 32GB 5S). Sweet, that saved me the Craigslist hassle selling my old phone. In and out in less than 30 mins.
Then I took a trip across the street to the Apple Store at the mall for a 5S leather case. The iPhone line there was pretty long, at least a 2 hour wait. Me...in and out in 5 minutes.
Once I left home I was back within an hour, with a 32GB 5S for $140 out of pocket.
The 5S is way faster than the 4S I left behind.
I've had a 4 since launch and it is now 3 years old. iOS 7 makes it feel like a new phone and it appears faster at doing thinks than with iOS 6. However, I have been patient and a good boy so I ordered the 5s 64Gb grey from the Apple Store, should be with me in 7-10 days :-(. Case has been dispatched though. A friend ordered though the CW and will have his on Monday.....
My SIM only contract is too good to give up.

Faster at doing what? My 4s does eveything I want pretty much straight away. Admittedly, I am not trying use my phone to compute protein folding problems, search for extraterrestrial signals in radio telescope background noise, render Pixar's new movie or crack the NSA's latest encryption algorithm .

Faster at everything. Launching apps (like my GPS app Navigon, which used to take some time to start), accessing data, games, drawing maps, etc. Everything. I use mine a lot for work, personal use, and recreation and am glad for the significant performance improvement.

How much quicker to launch an average app? If it is 0.2 seconds quicker on average and one opens 20 apps a day then a significant time saving of up to four seconds per day is on the table here.
It's faster at most things I've used it for so far. Erasing all the mostly useless email notifications from the Naim forum is at least twice as quick.
Turning off notifications saves time.
Very true. It's hard to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Arguably not a lot of wheat on here, though. Your life won't be demonstrably worse for not reading my rants, at least.
Your not on my 'blocked' list Winky. I enjoy your rants. Now where are my car keys.
For those who only see fit to make snarky, condescending comments about the improved processing speed, here's a clue for you. Don't get one!
As for me. I appreciate the better performance, and it was essentially a free upgrade to get it. I did pay a $100 to move from the 16GB to 32 GB version, but that was it. Verizon bought back my iPhone 4S for $1 more than I paid for it two years ago.
Interesting take on this as one real lame duck application of touchscreen phones is often typing itself. The reason some prefer a keyboard. Consistently swiping words up into the text sounds different but from your comments it works and if it takes better advantage of the touch screen form factor that sounds promising.
I am expecting my 5s later today.
The 24 month free Spotify as part of the contract is a nice sweetener. Great for playlists via blue tooth on long drives. Ok, it's a far cry from "naim for bentley" but hey, sounds pretty good to me
I live in LA, everything is media. I had a 3G and often left it at home, or only used 10% of it while everyone else is head down ignoring the world around. I couldn't stand talking to someone who took a call or texted. I am not controlled by media, face to face conversation....
I upgraded to 5S first day, very short line, keeping my ATT I get unlimited phone and text, now I'm texting a bit more but not obnoxious. I plan to use it more and it is so much faster than 3G. Took a short class at Store today which helped expand my capabilities. Last Sunday the waiter I had seen in line showed me how to do the finger print security, I gave him a nice tip.
I will keep it in my pocket most of the time, away from wanton females. Thanks for that alert.
