VW GTI ?

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 15 September 2013

13 cars driving a New Beetle. It's still fine, but started looking at new cars recently.

My heart seems to be set on the VW GTI - All good except for it's reliability ratings - worse than average.

Strange thing is: As I go over car's ratings, the VW GTI, in spite of having worse than average reliability ratings, has Perfect owner satisfaction ratings. Various other cars with perfect reliability have average or below average owner satisfaction ratings.

I guess the other cars are 'reliable' but no fun. :-)

How worried should I be about the car's reliability?

The RAV4 I've got is super reliable - not a single issue in the past 3 years - but it's also soul numbingly boring!

The Beetle had various issues during it's life time, but I guess if you can afford to pay through those issues, big deal - as long as it doesn't leave you stranded in the middle of the road at night...

The other thing keeping me from pulling the trigger - next year's models are completely redesigned - but will be made in Mexico. Since reliability ratings from Germany aren't stellar, maybe it doesn't matter...

The Sprite was a model of reliability and economy.

Got any pics of the Sprite?

Unfortunately not of mine but it was identical to this:

Total class Lionel. What a wonderful car. For me one of the best from the golden age of motoring. Dare I ask what happened to it?

Sold after about 5 years and bought a Triumph Dolomite Sprint, if I remember.

Here is a photo of a photo of the Lotus. It's in black and white but the car was painted in Lotus racing green. Got so fed up of its poor reliability that I garaged it for a couple of years, then sold it on to someone who wanted it for the body shell.

Nearing its 14th birthday, and never even a hiccup in all that time!

Good for you. Not one of Chapman's then....

My Elise had the heater/ventilation fan fitted the wrong way round so it sucked air from the windscreen instead of blowing air onto it. Didn't demist well until that was fixed

Volkswagen appear to have made a car specifically for the Yorkshire market.

The E-Up

Very frugal.

Ha!

Future models may include the surprisingly fast 'by eck' sports version.

the name alone is almost* enough for me to buy one - as a Yorkshireman I would love to be able to say I drive an e-up!

* well "almost" might be a slight exaggeration but every time I see the name e-up! I feel cheered up!.  In fact that's an idea - maybe there should be a model with bright colours called cheer-up!

The VW Up looks sufficiently appealing that I visited the VW web-page and spec'ed up one for price.

Then I did the same thing for the Skoda Citygo.

Not only the price was slightly less, but I preferred the more characterful look of the Czech variant.

I'd go for the fuel economy version in the three door base model with only front mud-flaps, rubber floor mats, and fulll-sized spare wheel as extras! And the non-metallic red finish as a no added cost option. Also of significance is that the local Skoda dealer is much better than the snooty local VAG outlet. I have been on the receiving end of their sarcasm even though I was only fetching an oil filter for a friend's Audi 80. They could not resist a jibe at someone who turned upon a classic road-bike! Fatheads, who lost a possible one-day potential sale on that pathetic and snide remark alone.

Obviously this was just for fun.

still tempted to go get the GTI ...

but maybe I'll get a NDS/555 instead. It's around the same price...

but the NDS/555 will have better resale in 10 years..

And with the NDS home, I really won't want to go anywhere anyway...

Sounds like a better plan MM and you'll get more enjoyment out of them

Taking delivery of the GTI next week. I figured I should enjoy the NDX for a couple of more years.

Unless my dealer has a change of heart and makes me a deal I can't refuse....
