HDX Upgrade to v1.7A fails

Posted by: deepinsight on 16 September 2013

Hi,

I've just attempted to upgrade my HDX from 1.6d to 1.7a

First phase of upgrading to 1.6g went fine.

Repeated process for upgrade from 1.6g to 1.7a and after a few minutes the screen displays, "System Programming. Firmware update failed. Please contact your dealer".

As most dealers are closed today, it currently being a Monday, does anyone have any idea if this is recoverable by me at home, or does it truly mean the start of a prolonged absence of said HDX in the Wiltshire wilds....

Have you powered down and then back up again? If so, what message do you get?

I have had exactly the same problem. Powering off does not work just comes up with the same message after powering up. I will take some deep breaths and try again tomorrow. Just hoping it does not take too long to fix!

Good Luck ROM - let us know how you get on.

I had to bite the bullet and return my HDX to naim - it came back running 1.7a with a bill for £176.20.

Details on the docket were, "Fault confirmed-failed software update. Replaced logo, fitted revised SATA header, modified PCI card, updated system services B/L-2.0.6 and manually forced 1.7A SP1 via 1.6H rescue disc".

Has worked fine ever since.

Will do. I cannot say I am impressed with this upgrade. I get the impression that some health warnings could have been issued to avoid this. I have already had a power supply replaced earlier this yearr - two in one year is careless!

On another subject; does anyone know how to connect a monitor (laptop) to the HDX. I have tried to do so to get the error code but a VGA lead between the two does not do the trick - just end up with a dark, blank screen.

Thanks.

Well, the manual says:

1.1.2 The External Display Interface
The HDX can be operated via its External Display Interface using the supplied remote handset (or a keyboard and/or mouse), in combination with an additional external display screen. The screen may be a monitor or TV with composite video, S-video or VGA input. The External Display Interface is closely related to the Front Panel Display Interface and similarly provides access to
HDX operational and setup features.

However,

I find either the desktop client or web-browser interfce much easier to use:

1.1.4 The Web Browser Interface
If the HDX is installed in a home network the External Display and Front Panel Display interfaces can be duplicated by any Flash enabled web browser.

To access the External Display Interface from a web browser, open the web browser and type the unique “name” of your HDX into the browser address field. The name is the last four characters of the MAC address (excluding the colon separators) printed on the rear panel preceded by NSHDX). A typical “name” would be NSHDX89B5.
To access the Front Panel Display interface from a web browser add the suffix:
/index.html?movie=fp.swf to the HDX name.
E.g. NSHDX89B5/index.html?movie=fp.swf
Note: Depending on your web browser you may need to type “http://” immediately before the HDX name.

1.1.5 The Desktop Client
If the HDX is installed in a home network that includes a personal computer running Windows XP, Vista or 7, it can be operated via the Desktop Client Interface. The Desktop Client application provides comprehensive operational, search and background functionality. The Desktop Client is
covered in a separate manual that can be downloaded from the Naim Audio web site at www.naimaudio.com.

When I had issues upgrading my UnitiServe to 1.7a I did connect a VGA cable to a screen to see what messages appeared during boot, but to be honest it wasn't that informative and access to the embedded winXP Operating System was not possible that way (for me) either.

Naim can connect via the interweb to your kit - post an e-mail to them describing your problem and see what they suggest.

steven.hopkins@naimaudio.com

or

phil.harris@naimnet.com'

Both *extremely* helpful....

I have spoken with Steve before and he has always been helpful. I will probably need his services again by the looks of things. All this on New Years Eve; so no music for me then.

Thanks for all the info, though still struggling with viewing the interface. I use the DTC but cannot access the device although I can see all the files on it from my computer.

Just to let all of you out there that my HDX is still down after 1 month...

Posted on: 28 January 2014 by deepinsight

Time for the HDX to have a trip to Salisbury I think...

Posted on: 28 January 2014 by ROM

It is there now...thats my point. Why so long?

Posted on: 28 January 2014 by deepinsight

I bet they've all been busy with the new kit's launch etc. Might be worth giving the interfacing dealer a call to find out why...

Posted on: 28 January 2014 by ROM

The dealer is on the case, my issue with Naim is that when I had a problem last summer it was the same story - very busy. I have to say that they really are very slow to fix things - they have to sort this one out as they will find out soon there is no hiding place. No matter how good the equipment might be, it has to be reliable. I was 'dumb' enough to buy a Unitiqute last week as a back-up. I am having problems with that now as it cannot see any of the music I had created on my NAS from the HDX. I am about to post my problem for that one....

I understand it must be frustrating, but given choice of fix quickly or fix properly, i am sure you Prefer the latter, not to mention the need to soak test the unit after its repair.

I do understand but this is a business not a hobby. Cars are just as complicated and I never had to wait a month for a service! They need to get their act together.

"it cannot see any of the music I had created on my NAS from the HDX"

Might be able to help with that....

Posted on: 28 January 2014 by ROM

That would be great if you could. I have just posted my problem under the heading 'UnitiQute cannot play files from my TS212'.

Posted on: 29 January 2014 by Claus-Thoegersen

Yes it must be frustrating, however a  good dealer should have been able to loan a backup system. That has always been the case in my situation. Actually it has only happened once in the last 13 years when my Supercap for the 252 went for a dr operation.

Have you ever tried having a smartphone repaired under warranty? If not this situation is the same  or worse.

My potential assistance with this query seems to have been moderated away. Sorry if I infringed the rules.
