Couple of n-Stream questions

Posted by: quisquose on 19 September 2013

Bit of a novice here and still learning.

I'm sure this is simple, but when I select a uPnP track with the remote it plays that track and then continues to play the rest of the tracks on that album, which is how I want it, but when I select a track using my iPhone it plays that track only. Can I change this?

Also, has anybody else noticed their n-Stream app displaying two of everything from time to time?

Before playing a track, the app gives you the option to play only that track or the all album, from this track on.

If you do not have that option, uncheck ''compatibility mode'' in the app settings, or if it doesn't solve, update your app from the App Store.

Mmmm ... I'm not getting that option. Compatability mode is "off" and the app is the latest version 3.4.7079. I only downloaded it at the weekend.

I'm using n-stream 3.4 on my i-pad 2 and it works OK. You need to keep your finger pressed on the screen for a second or two for the play options to show.

Yes, doing that and the play options I get are:

Play

Queue next

Queue last

Add to new playlist

Cancel

When I press "play" it plays that track only.

A bit of an obvious question. How have you set up the views for your upnp server for your iphone i.e. are you looking at a folder view or by artist or by album ? If you have a "by album" view you should get a "play from this track" option.

I've got two folders on my server, FLAC and iTunes. The first for flac files and the second where I copy my mp3 files from my laptop.

I always browse both by folder, so I will check the by album option when I get back home. However what I can say is this.

When I browse by folder using the remote it always plays from the track I select, but when I browse by folder using the n-Stream app:

1. If I choose the FLAC folder to browse it just lists the individual tracks (with artwork to the left) and only play the track that I select with the options listed in my last post.

2. If I choose the iTunes folder to browse it lists the individual tracks with the addition of an album summary at the top and a "play" button. If I select an individual track it provides the options listed above but with the addition of a "play from this track" button.

Weird. So even though I always browse by folder, the behaviour of the app is different depending on which folder I select.

It's the server software which determines what the control point interface looks like on your iphone and on your streamer i.e. the directory/folder options you have. So a few questions:

1. Where are your files stored e.g. on a hard drive on your computer or on one or more NAS (network attached storage) drives ?

2. What media server software are you using to organise and play your music files ?

3. Is the media software installed on your computer or on your NAS drives?

4. As you are using the n-stream app I assume you have dedicated streamer (e.g. Naim NDS, NDX or ND5XS) and are not sending your files direct to a DAC ?

1. The files are stored on an external hard drive connected to my Netgear router using ReadyDNLA to be visible on every computer in the house and the Superuniti.

2/3. I'm not using any software to play these files, only the Superuniti device. I have iTunes on my laptop and have copied the mp3 files into the iTunes directory, and I have used dbPoweramp to put my cd collection into flac format.

4. You are correct.

Hi,

Just looked up Netgear's ReadyDLNA website (not familiar with this set up) and it seems that your router acts as the media server using ReadyDLNA with your External harddrive attached via the usb port on your router.

Presumably ReadyDLNA shows up on your SuperUniti and your nstream app as your only server.

Had a look at this tutorial showing how to play to a Xbox360

http://www.netgear.com/landing/en-us/readyshare.aspx

which suggests that the ReadyDLNA music library is configured to show the following catregories:

Albums

Artists

Saved Playlists

Songs

Genres

so these categories should be what you see when you navigate in your SU or your iphone app.

Thanks for that sjbabbey, you now know more about ReadyDLNA than I do!

When the Superuniti looks for servers it is usually only the ReadyDLNA that it finds, because I usually have the PC switched off. Once selected I am presented with the following categories:

Albums

Artists

Saved Playlists

Songs

Genres

Folders

I always choose "folders" otherwise I am presented with two of everything.

I just fail to understand why I am given the option of "play from" when I access the iTunes folder, but not when I access the FLAC folder?

Anyway, I'll investigate a bit more when I get home.

You say that you see an album summary when you choose a iTunes folder but not for your FLAC folders. Is it possible that ITunes has created cue or playlist files for each of the albums and put these in the individual folders alongside the mp3 files?

Okay, I think I've sussed it, but still a bit puzzled as to why it behaves differently for different types of file.

When I select ReadyDLNA I am presented with 4 options:

Browse Folders

Music

Pictures

Video

I've been selecting "browse folders" and presented with "flac" and "iTunes" and then noticed that n-Stream has behaved differently depending on which folder I have chosen, not giving a "play from" option with the flac files.

However, if I select "Music" first I am given:

Album

All Music

Artist

Folders

Genre

Playlists

If I then select "folders" I am presented the same option of "flac" and "iTunes", but now n-Stream has behaved exactly the same, with the option to "play from" irrespective of which folder to access.

So basically I need to choose "Music" first.

The puzzle is why these files are treated differently when choosing "Browse Folders" first rather than "Music", and why n-Stream behaves differently to using the remote anyway? Using the remote it doesn't matter how the file is accessed, it always plays it and the next track.

Glad to hear you've sorted out your main problem.

The only other suggestion as to the different behaviour is that your i-Tunes and FLAC folders on your computer/hard drive may have different folder properties i.e. the i-Tunes folder may be specified as a Music folder and your FLAC folder may be a General content folder.

Can't think of anything else I'm afraid.

That makes sense, and thanks for your help.

As long as I always remember to choose "Music" first I don't think I have any need to change anything now.
