Will my pet wood pigeon survive the winter?

Posted by: fatcat on 19 September 2013

For the last 3 months we've had a wood pigeon virtually living in our garden. Every morning my wife puts seeds in the garden, every morning he's sat on the roof waiting. If I see him walking around the garden I give him half a slice of bread, recently he's started attracting my attention, by either walking up to the window if I'm standing at the window, or sitting on the fence where I can see him from my TV viewing chair. As he's my pet, I obviously feed him.

At the weekend I took a few photos and discovered why he virtually begs for food, his lower beak is missing. Will he survive in wild bird seed and bread.

Sorry for your loss.

It was very decent of someone to take him to the vet, and to find out the details of what happened.

I’ve had a cat go missing before, and stay missing [...presumed dead] which is kind of hard to go on with for a long while.

Is that a picture of your cat in your avatar?

It was good to find out what happened to him, the people who took him to vet definitely did the right thing. It was strange that his tag and phone number was missing, he wasn't allowed out without his phone number around his neck.

That is his picture, taken during a serious wash.

Cyril's  Back.

Until last week I hadn't seen him for a couple of months. Before he disappeared he was quite tame, he'd let me get as close as 10 feet without flying away. When he returned, he was just like any other wild bird, flew away as soon as he spotted me.

This morning he became tame again, let me walk into the garden without taking flight, although I did have a handful of bread and crushed nuts.

I'm surprised the cat hasn't killed it by now.

We don't have a cat anymore. When we did, Cyril would walk within 10 feet of it, but always keeping an eye on it.

Just like he keeps an eye on me.

He looks in good condition Fat Cat. Maybe he has been away and taken an extended xmas/new year holiday. He has a very nice head on him.

Our FAT LUMP(Cooper) is starting to get bloody fussy over what food we give him. He was all skin and bones when taken in as a stray. Last nite Kate gave him some Marks & Sparks Free Range corn fed chicken, tonite i went to give him some of my grilled steak and he turned his nose up at it.

I bet Cooper wouldn't turn his nose up to peanut fed pigeon.
