IOS7 + NSTREAM = CRASH
Posted by: pedromarmot on 20 September 2013
At least for me, after the update, no music.... please fix it.
After updating iPad and iphone 4 with iOS 7 the iPad works as it should.my iphone controls the iradio as it should but will only allow me to choose a album and play.it won't allow me to make playlists or add track to que.
Same problem as many are experiencing.as mentioned it is a strange bug.you would think it would either work or not.
Scott
Many thanks Phil. This is very welcome and reassuring information.
Could I suggest that this sort of thing be posted as an update in the sticky thread at the top of the Streaming Audio section?
I have a new bug !! once I've selected the FM tuner from the app, I cannot control the volume and cannot select another input. Regardless of which input I click on, the tuner continues to play. Can anyone else replicate this same issue ?
Okay I have spent the last hour playing. I have the issue with changing inputs on the iphone 4 running IOS 7.02 as stated above. This happens 90% of the time. The app crashes about 75% of the time.
however I have not been able to replicate this error on my iPad also running IOS 7.02, it works without an issue.

This is odd behaviour. I am using an iPhone 5 and the iOS 7.02. Which iPad do you have ?
I wrote too soon, went to change input with the iPad and it wouldn't work. I have the 3rd gen ipad
Not sure this is related to IOS7. I've had this exact problem with the FM tuner on Nstream since the 3.21 firmware update. I reported it to Naim on August 16 (so it is on their radar screen). I've sidelined Nstream until this is all sorted out, as I've also lost UPNP with IOS7.
Nick,
Belated reply - yes, I am saying that going to album/artist view and clicking on a track works fine.
I have tried all sorts of combinations with an iPad and two iPhone 5s running iOS 7 and have had no problems at all. Which would seem to seem to confirm that this bug is hard to track down.
I do think it's worth remembering that even Apple, with all its firepower and staff, had to issue an update to iOS 7 shortly after release to fix some faults.
So, as I said before, I think it is unfair to blame Naim for the problems.
I'm sure it will get sorted.
Thanks Jon. Yes, this does seem to be a tricky one and having now seen Phil Harris's post, perhaps I was being a bit hard on them. I think it would help if we were better informed, for instance through a more detailed sticky post, but still maintain that suggesting people avoid upgrading iOS is rather ridiculous when many people would already have done it and Apple devices are used for so many other things.
I think the biggest issue here is not that the App is broken. its the defeaning silence from Naim, the last official update was 20th September.
Having run large IT services for many years I find that users are happier if they are given regular updates, even if its "we are no further forward" than no update at all.
Perhaps the best option for Naim long term is to release details of their interface as open source so that other companies such as Ipeng can offer an alternative app on multiple platforms.

Have you not read Phil Harris's post above, 30th Sept?
Jason.
Nick,
Completely agree on the sticky post.
it's not overly helpful - especially as other apps may demand an upgrade to iOS 7. Hard to see what else could be said, mind you. As far as I'm aware you cannot reinstall iOS 6.
Funnily enough, two friends who have also upgraded to iOS 7 have also had no problems with their Naim streamers - which would seem to indicate it's a random bug somewhere.
I can understand the annoyance, though.
Whoops. Sorry.
I think Phil's post explains better than I can.
I totally agree with Granthar. Its the lack of info being supplied by Naim. We still have no idea if Naim have found the source of the problem, if they have developed a fix, if they have provided a new version too apple for approval. Surely Naim could provide an update of where they are after two weeks of being made aware users are having problems. Im glad i didn't update but i'd be well pis*ed had i.

No, because I had assumed it would be good practice to update the sticky where everyone visiting the forum would see it, not bury it within a post
Does reinstalling the app(s) make any difference?
No.
And this goes on and on, and the days pass, no answer from Naim, no comments, nothing...

Guys...
as we do say at the top of the forums we really do need to be contacted directly for support
When did you contact them pedromarmot? The remote should be working in the meanwhile.
I seem to have solved the issue of the crashing app when trying to select individual tracks and the dreaded FM tuner freezing the input/volume. I was just playing around and installed MinimServer earlier (normally run Twonky on a QNAP) and when trying to select this server from within n-Stream, the app was crashing almost immediately. It took many attempts but I finally got to the set up screen and enabled "UPnP compatibility mode", thinking this was the issue.
It seems to have solved the issue, I was able to play individual tracks from a variety of albums, switch to and from different inputs (including the FM tuner) and was able to control volume. Running both Twonky and MinimServer - same results. I was able to select tracks and app did not crash.
I would prefer not to enable "compatibility mode" as it seems to be slower and does not offer the ability to view albums as I would prefer.
Can anyone else with similar issue(s) try enabling "UPnP compatibility mode". Very curious to know if it works for others.
UPDATE 1: Running in this mode does not seem to offer the same functionality. I no longer have the ability to cue up tracks.
UPDATE 2: Disabled MinimServer, only running Twonky. Disabled "UPnP compatibility mode" and problem came back.
Well it was a short lived moment of joy. Apologies for the false alarm.
I concur with these findings, enabling upnp does appear to resolve the switching input issue. I am using Asset upnp on a Windows Home Server 2011, iPhone 4 and 3rd gen iPad...
perhaps this his is what Naim would have suggested if I had rung the support line, will test this theory at 9am
Update:
n-Stream 3.5 has been with Apple for a week now awaiting approval, as soon as their approval process is done it will be on the App store as an update.
there are two iOS7 related bugs in n-Stream:
- Fixed: iOS7 Virtual CD booklet web links do not work
- Fixed: iOS7 Crash when playing a single track from an album (UPnP). Playing all tracks or using UPnP compatibility mode works round this. Does not affect all users, only some device/iOS combinations.
In addition to these two iOS7 compatibility fixes the following are also included:
- Fixed: Failure to discover UPnP servers.
- Fixed: CD system automation would not work if CD was configured on ext pre or DAC input
- Fixed: Sluggish behaviour on FM input when scrolling radio text shown (and text contains unexpected formatting characters)
- Fixed: Crash when UPnP trying to play or create playlist from a folder containing image files
- Fixed: Crash when indexing files with corrupt characters in filename
I'm sure you all appreciate we have to juggle getting a release out ASAP with making sure it is tested as extensively as possible.
Cheers
Tom
Thank you Tom. Very welcome news.
