Vinyl - too lazy to change the record
Posted by: MangoMonkey on 20 September 2013
I've been listening to PauSimon/Graceland for about a week straight, every week. I'm just not motivated to change the record or even the side. Just this evening, I've heard the same side for about 2 hours straight - it's at arm's length so I just put the needle back at the beginning.
It's like having the same CD in your car's cd player for months....
Although I would admit - to my wife's annoyance sometimes - that I play my favourite records incessantly the favouritism does fluctuate - Goldfrapp "Tales of Us" at the moment.
So Graceland for a week straight might be considered obsessive.
Four days max - imho
same here
for some off reason been listen to the B side of synchronicity (the police) almost every day this week.
sounds amazing on vinyl.

I'd be interested to know WHO originally placed Graceland on the platter. Somebody's obviously having a jolly jape at your expense.
The HD tracks high res download has a bunch of extra tracks on it and an interview. Sorry, they could not resist compressing it, but they make for very interesting listening. Maybe it can be had on vinyl also.
Now the really funny thing is there is a joke on both of us. Mastering quality aside, its a 16 bit mix from analogue tape. At least the vinyl gets a less hot master, but in theory CD is the best quality replay on this one.

I had the opportunity to listen to the first version released on vinyl - a lot more dynamic range on that one, compared to the brand spanking new release that I have...
so much for vinyl..

well it was really only two days, but I like to exaggerate - but once a record is on it, it stays..
Maybe I just need to expand my vinyl collection.
Is Graceland the only LP you own MM? That could explain it. There is too much good music to listen to to keep the same record on. I often find one good LP leads to another, if you have more than one of course.
Interesting. On the tour Paul Simon used to play You Can Call me Al twice, back to back. So there is a precedent (unless you played side 1 repeatedly).
I figured I'll go buy some LP todays.
Came back with Daft Punk(the new one and discovery), Gold Frapp (never heard of her, but seems to be doing rounds on the forums and a couple of others I can't remember now).
LPs are expensive.
Given, my collection isn't huge - just bought my first TT about a year and a half ago - but I'm just too impatient.
Here's the way I deal with my LPs:
a) First look for the LP I want to play.
b) Take it out of the sleeve.
c) Curse, because I only have two hands, and can't pick up the LP from the TT with one hand and put the other one on it.
d) Now I look for a safe place to put the LP that I took out it's sleeve
e) Put it somewhere - that looks safe - but will scratch up the LP.
f) Pick the record from the TT
g) Curse, because I don't have a place to put it.
h) Start looking for it's sleeve ..
I) Can't find it
Put it on the floor
put the other one on the TT
use the second one's sleeve to put the first one in...
you get the gist I'm doing everything wrong
Wow!!!
So much easier just to pick up the needle and bring it to the outer edge. :-)
Now I understand why folks went from LPs to cds and now to streaming.
I've gone from streaming (via illegal MP3s) to buying CDs and ripping them to play on the PC to having a CD player to having a streamer to buying a TT.

You gave me an idea. Wouldn't it be amusing if your record collection could be attached to your profile. If you wonder why Fred blogs loves speaker Y the answer may be in his or her collection of chipmunk records.
Whenever anyone mentions Graceland it reminds me of my share house at the time and driving through the suburb of Toowong in Brisbane where a guy was playing it so loud you could here it in the car above the rush hour gridlocked traffic. A characteristic of Brisbane is loud music through open windows in summer heat, or it was before air conditioning became common.
