Guilty Pleasures

Posted by: Dungassin on 24 September 2013

Didn't know whether to post this here or in Music Room, although it IS partially music related, so ...

I've been having what I call a 'guilty pleasures afternoon'

Started off with Steel Panther.  Great heavy metal band, even if they are a spoof group, and the lyrics always make me laugh. Don't listen if you're easily offended, though.

Finished off with (would you believe!) Showaddywaddy.  My kids would probably call me an old fart for listening to them, and damned if I didn't know all the words!

Think I'll finish off the evening by watching a 'mindless violence' type film (Stallone, Schwarzenegger etc) and then a Romcom.

Isn't it nice to be non PC occasionally?

Hi John.

You have just made me feel better regarding my  'Coronation St' guilty pleasure.

Shame on you John,  posting this.

Now, excuse me while I watch few episodes of The Big Bang Theory.

Posted on: 24 September 2013 by Agricola

Been watching episodes of Poirot, Marple [Hickson], and Rumpole Of The Bailey lately.

Virtually no gratuitous violence, and some tremendous humour ...along the way.

Well, I played  'Jack Reacher' as my mindless violence film.  Never watched before, and its surprisingly good.  Not particularly violent as these things go.

Was going to watch a RomCom as I said earlier, but changed my mind and instead tried to continue watching a 'Supernatural' series 6 bluray disc, but having problems (just started a thread in Home Theatre about that).  Now about to rewatch 'Castle' instead.

I'm slightly in SWMBO's bad books, because I cranked up the volume on my Guitar amp this morning (pretending to be Richie Blackmore ...)

I asked her if she wanted a complimentary ticket to see Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake, for those of you who don't know who he is) in Burton for a PRS organised event on October 16th, but she said no.  I get a comp ticket because I own a PRS guitar!

Yes, that show has a couple of big distractions if I recall correctly.

I love Come Dine With Me and Four In A Bed.

Hell, I'll even watch Dickinson's Real Deal on occasion.

I recently watched a documentary about David Cassidy. Alice Cooper, somewhat surprisingly a good, long term, friend of Cassidy, said that while he (Alice Cooper) was out playing golf with his hard core rock star pals, Cassidy was out-drinking, out-partying, out-drugging and out-shagging all of them put together. Good effort.

Funnily enough, they are usually on in the other order.

Mine seems to be all manner of Sci-Fi.

From the 70's classics, Star Trek and just about any old rubbish churned out today...don't know why perhaps a way to escape. But I find myself choosing the most appalling Sci-Fi film over anything else when I have had a particularly tiring day. Strangely, I am not that into Sci-Fi novels even though Sci-Fi works better on the page than on celluloid in my opinion.

Jason.

p.s. Christopher what is "Smokie"?

I'm a great SciFi fan as well, plus the old Hammer films

Smokie?  Do you mean the group?  Made 'Living Next Door To Alice' IIRC

I don't feel guilty about it at all though.

I LOVE Mud!

Kevin,

I was a member of a Boys Club, between the ages of 9-12 in the very late 70's very early 80's and our sole purpose was to make old people feel happy by ad-libbing to various songs, playing wooden guitars and dressing up as women, padded bras and tights and all. Even some of the boys parents were party to this Carnival.

I have to say that I loved it. I was first introduced to Mud and the Sweet at this boys club, 'Blockbuster' is one of my all time favorite tracks and I was the front man.

Also from this period I got to know Dr Hook, who I have a soft spot for, they were a great hit with the oldens then. It was also the time of Bucks Fizz (I was Cheryl) and Tight Fit (I was a loin cloth cladded drummer.

Anyway, I guess that really is enough guilty pleasures for one day.

Ah, Sweet ...

Great band.  They eventually morphed into a metal band.

Aah Sweet! Now you are talking!

Loved "Fox on the Run" and used to play it on the guitar. Took me 20 years before I realised it was a Sweet song!

One can never have enough guilty pleasures Jason. Loved Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Racy, Arrows, Hot Choc, Kenny and all those other great Mickey Most/RAK Records bubblegum bands.

I suppose the elephant in the glam room though is Gary Glitter. Can one still like "Rock & Roll Parts 1 & 2", "Hello Hello" and "Leader of the Gang" without feeling guilty? I dunno...

Posted on: 25 September 2013 by Dungassin

Along with Jonathan King. (not glam, I know, but the same problem)

Personally I still listen to them occasionally. After all, I purchased them before their perversions were revealed.  I don't feel I am condoning their behaviour by doing so.

Hammer, Carry On, Rockford. Love them all and feel no guilt whatsoever about that.

My 18 year old walked into the living room as we were watching Fresh Meat on On Demand. He was quite shocked as he reckoned that wasn't for "old folks". He's obviously forgotten his mum and dad were students too, albeit a long time ago.

I wonder what his guilty pleasures will be.
