Macbook pro as source

apologies to all for a non naim topic.
My daughter and wife have banished me from my main rig, they are using the room for studies and work.
Sadly I am without my naim system until I decide to move it to another room
Anyway I have been listening to my Macbook pro with sennheiser PX100 headphones (still one of the best I ever heard) and VLC media player with some of my CD rippled on FLAC.
I must say I am pleasantly surprised. It's not a bad source at all and doesn't sound harshly digital. I wish I had made this discovery much earlier. It even sounds quite engaging to me, to the point that my intense dislike of CD seems to be going away after this experience. In fact I have purchased some vinyl and CD of the same albums and I have to say, on the Macbook, the CD is not as bad as I thought, and in fact quite a pleasant listening experience.
one of the albums is 18 months - Calvin Harris. Ok fine the Vinyl must be from a 24 bit master, but the CD is not bad at all in comparison. I almost regret spending some 35 GBP on the vinyl...
It seems OS X sounds much better than windows for audio?
maybe digital doesn't suck after all? is this possible ?
I think in the Macbook pro, I am not using any SPDIF interface, and I am not playing CD, so jitter must be a lot less than poor quality CD playback?
Also, on the reviews of the audiophilleo product (the same one used on the DAC V1), there are glowing reviews of the USB/SPDIF converter.
I have heard the DAC V1 my macbook pro, and I must say it sounds fantastic
