Transcoding Question

Posted by: Bart on 05 October 2013

I've set my UnitiServe to transcode flac to .wav.  I recently bought the Grateful Dead Complete Studio Recordings set from HDTracks in 192/24 format.  When transcoded and served from my uServe and played on my NDS, nStream shows "44.1kHz wav" as the format.

Am I "losing" the benefits of the hi res format by transcoding like this?  I should know this, but obviously don't.

A shot in the dark here, Bart, but are you sure you didn't inadvertently select 'CD 44.1kHz/16bit' instead of 'Convert to WAV' on your UnitiServe (see Manual under 'UPnP Settings') ?

Yes it does look like I have the wrong transcoding setting selected!

Many thanks Mo

Hi Bart -

What do you think of these downloads?  Do you have the CD versions to compare against?

Thanks!

So far I've only closely listened to Workingman's Dead and American Beauty.  They are PHENOMENAL.  I heard more separation of instruments and voices than I've heard on any other cd version.  (It's been almost 30 years since I heard these on vinyl, so forgive me for not being able to compare.)

I did some quick listens to Shakedown Street, and wasn't AS blown away, but I did not go back to other cd versions yet.

More to come!  But based on what I've heard so far, I recommend spending the $ on these.

All the best,

Bart

No !!??? Glad that was it, but it was pure luck, I promise !

I'm feeling envious of your GD downloads. I wonder if they'll come to Qobuz. But it's not cheap, and it's a pity it doesn't come with a thoroughly comprehensive booklet for such a price !

Have a great Sunday listening, and please report further.

Thanks again Maurice for the suggestion -- now I'm seeing wav but properly at 192kbps.

Yes the files are great, but there is no booklet, and no art other than a newly created graphic for the collection itself.

Hook -- I am giving Blues for Allah a good listen this am, and it too is quite wonderful. There is SO much going on in Help on the Way, and I can discern each little percussion instrument and each little Bob Weir guitar blingy lick better than I am accustomed to on the studio cd.  Oh and don't forget each of Phil's inventive bass notes.  I have always preferred One From The Vault to the studio cd, and this remaster of the studio cd brings them to equal footing I do believe!  (Subject to further consideration.)

Hi Bart - didn't know this was available - I've still got all the vinyl plus both CD box sets but hey, it's the Dead. I'm not bothered about booklets etc.; all my CDs are ripped and all that stuff is in the attic with the rest of my CDs.

I think this release deserves its own thread in the Music Room - I'm especially keen to hear how Reckoning comes out. Also does this release have all the extra tracks that were included in the box sets? Also is it available elsewhere?

Pev I know that we're veering off-track here and that this does belong in the Music Room.  But briefly, it's just the studio lp's -- no Reckoning, Without a Net, etc.  And none of the extra tracks from those Rhino (?) reissues; just the tracks from the original lp's.

Cheers!
