Unitiqute 2 network question

Posted by: Granthar on 06 October 2013

I have intermittent problems with the Unitiqute dropping the network connection despite laptop etc always being ok, this happens perhaps once per day. I am running wireless into a dedicated Draytek wireless router into which a Windows Home Server 2011 is streaming music via Asset upnp.

I would like to have a dedicated music server that is plugged directly into the Unitiqute 2, can I plug directly into the Ethernet port using a crossover cable if I set static IP,s on both or do I have to go via a router?

The wireless router I use at present is on a different floor of the house so it isn't practical to run cables to that.

You cannot plug a server into the Qute with Ethernet cable. Can you run a single cable from the router to the music room, and then use a switch to connect the server and Qute? We relocated our Draytek into the living room: wireless was unreliable even from 5m away. We have a wire from the router to a switch, which sits beneath the Hifi rack.

I would beg to differ with HH, you could so as you suggest and connect the Home Server to the Unitiqute using a crossover cable and fix the IP addresses. This would allow you to stream from your upnp server, but that is all.

However this does mean that the Unitiqute is no longer connected to your network or Internet so you will lose iRadio and also the ability to control the Qute using nStream, if you do this.

Ideally I would do as HH suggests and run a cable to the listening position and install a small hub.  Are you aware that you can now get flat ethernet cable? It is easily run under carpet etc.

Another option would be to relocate the server, install a hub and then use a wireless bridge to link your music network to the wireless network, alowing iRadio and iPad control. The wireless bridge would connect to the 'music hub'.

Might be worth waiting to see if the new n-stream software solves the disconnect problem, my Qute dropped the connection most nights, when it was sited on my wife's side of the room the network key would also be erased(!) The fault lies with my wife's Lumie light, a special sunset/sunrise simulation light for SAD sufferers etc. The thyristor 'chop' in 'sunset' mode (dimming) caused so much local pollution the Qute would 'drop network' and even change some internal settings. I now have the Qute on a Belkin mains filter, not ideal for SQ but it didn't work when isolating the lamp as the radiated interference can 'jump' the filter block, and reintroduce itself as conducted rf.

Ah, OK, I was told that this was not possible.

So if I connect the pc to the network via wireless won't the Unitiqute see the internet gateway through its connection?

Thanks for the explanation, you learn something new everyday, such as the use of a crossover cable. I suppose that as I use my server for ripping, it would not be able to access the database for album art and so on. Would nStream still work if the server was connected directly to the Qute?

As described, no. N-Stream runs on a portable device that requires a connection via the wi-fi capability of the host (pad/pod) and router. Thus no router = no wi-fi = no n-stream connection....

I think I'm being a bit dim today! Clearly that's the case. It all makes the case for wiring up via the router, as you lose so much functionality with the direct connection. I would not want to use a qute without nStream.

but it is good to know if your internet is severed by the gas co. you can still access your digital music (US to SU!) via a crossover cable and remote.. one good reason to assign static IPs before the lights go out
