Easy to understand when you realize who nominated him:

MOSCOW

A little-known Russian peace academy that counts several parliamentarians, diplomats, and academicians among its members has nominated President Vladimir Putin for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, claiming that his efforts to turn the momentum for US military intervention in Syria into an international peace process qualifies him at least as much as Barack Obama, who won the prestigious award in 2009.

The Moscow-based International Academy of Spiritual Unity of Nations of the World which, according to its website, has been active in building bridges of friendship between Russia and the world for about 20 years, announced that it had filed the nomination with the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee at a Moscow press conference on Tuesday.  (The Christian Science Monitor)

..and what they 'forgot' to consider in their evaluation (Putin's brutal role in the war of Chechnya).

I am tickled by the fact that they are comparing Putin's qualifications to Obama's as a justification to their nomination. I could take it a step further and claim that since the Academy awarded Yasser Arafat  the Nobel Peace Prize (jointly) in 1994 then any Joe Schmo honestly deserves it.

Nobel is or was a manufacturer of explosives. Perhaps they [secretly] love Warmongers.

Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896, was a brilliant Swedish chemist, industrialist and inventor. His most famous inventions were gelignite and dynamite. Both were intended for peaceful purposes such as mining and quarrying but of course were also put to other, less benign, uses.

A French newspaper accidentally published Nobel's obituary while he was still alive. Nobel, horrified at how his legacy might be seen, used his considerable wealth to set up prizes to promote peace and learning - so we have prizes for chemistry, physics, medicine, literature and "the propagation of international fraternity".

Dear Kevin,

I know the history.I was just being a tad naughty!

But I think that Tony has a point about the Peace Prize being somewhat devalued when a spiked Warmonger like Obama walks round with this particular badge of fame.

All of his warmongering occurred after he was awarded the Prize.  He came into office in late January 2009, and was awarded the Prize in October 2009.

The Nobel peace prize was devalued long ago when Kissinger received one. War monger and US influence peddler extraordinaire

I guess there are always exceptions to the rule!

Please let's change the title to "Nobel Peace Price".

Englert and Higgs thoroughly deserve their award and plenty others do too.

To prevent tarnishing the Nobel Peace Prize and to assure only deserving recipients, it should never be awarded to any politician. These guys all have their own motives and interests which are rarely noble.

President Obama clearly deserves another Nobel prize for eavesdropping.

Don't worry. They do trust each other...we on the other hand!

+1

At least Kissinger's co-winner that year, North Vietnam's Le Duc Tho, had the decency to decline the award stating that the peace accords did not really achieve peace at all.  The American political humourist Tom Lehrer said at the time that giving the Peace Prize to Kissinger meant that obvioulsly political satire was obsolete and he never performed again.

It's gotten a bit like winning a Grammy Award.

If Yasser Arafat were alive he'd take offense to that comment...

Posted on: 24 October 2013 by joerand

Well Dr. Mark,

Yasser won the Nobel and Ringo won some Grammies, but if not for the keffiyeh or the earring could you tell who is who?
