Broadband Speed with UnitiServe

Posted by: The Meerkat on 14 October 2013

Hi everyone

At the moment I have a wired connection between my router and my UnitiServe. I have fibre optic, 40Mb broadband. Do I really need to pay the extra for the fibre optic, if standard broadband would suffice? The reason that I ask is that my contract is up for renewal soon. My current system works really well, and I know they say, "Don't mend what's not broken", but I do need to do some spending cuts.

Do any of you Guys that have Naim Servers, just use standard broadband Without any problems?

Thanks

We have standard EE broadband, which manages about 9Mb, and it's fine. All you need the broadband for is to get the metadata and art. Internet radio works fine too, unless the boy is doing gaming at the same time. Unless you need the speed for something else, the Serve will be just fine.

Normal broadband will be just fine, however if I had fibe I'd keep it (as our wire broadband is 700k max. and prey to such interference from all quarters. Today something made the phone unusable for 10mins, upset the SuperUniti (wired) requiring a powercycle to get it working. The Qute2 (wireless) required a factory reset, NAS did an auto system reset. It also KO'd Freesat boxes at two neighbouring properties, I had to manually rescan both for aged technophobic residents. If I had the fibe option I'd keep it.

Hi David.

Std. broadband speeds should be just fine.  As HHwrote, all the uServe wants to see outside of your home is the ripping database.  That is very little data, and I am sure you won't notice if it takes .5 seconds to pull down the data, or 1.5 seconds.  If you can save a few quid per month, go for it.

I have a Unitiserve / Uniti, and have BT Broadband, not fibre.

I get between 3-4Mbps download speeds at best.

we live out in the sticks and no possibility for fibre or better speeds at the moment at least.

But having said this, I have very few problems.

So I'm sure standard broadband will do you just fine and save you some money without any problem.

Thank you all for your help so far.

Most of the cheaper broadband providers supply a router that does not have a Gig E port. (SKY Hub) Is this port only required for fast fibre broadband? (My Bt Home hub 3 has one) I was looking at a Sky deal, which is a 3rd of the Bt price.

I forgot to mention, my UnitiServe SSD serves my music from a NAS Drive.

I bought my own DrayTek router, which is really easy to use and works well. You can pick them up used on eBay. We have EE broadband. Aside from the line rental, which we pay upfront for the equivalent of £11 a month, we pay £12.50 a month for broadband, free calls to UK landlines, including 0845 and 0870, free calls to European landlines, and 1000 UK mobile minutes. You get £5 off a month if you have an Orange phone - the £12.50 is after the discount. A PAYG phone that you use once a year gets you the discount. It's a very reliable service, so may be worth a thought. And getting back on topic, it works with a UnitiServe.

Thanks for that info Hungryhalibut...I used to be with them, but their mobile signal was so poor in my area, I had to go with another provider.

Anyway, I have taken the plunge, probably the wrong decision, Sky for £3.70 a month, unlimited. If it's crap and doesn't perform well with my UnitiServe, and Internet radio, I'll go back to Bt. It's always trial and error with ISPs, and once you've signed up, you're stuck with them for at least 12 months.

Lot's of members, as in your case, buy their own separate router. I know that Garyi has one, but I remember it was quite expensive. So I guess it's not only how fast the broadband is, but also how good the router is.

Thanks again
