Album Art, genres and Bliss

Posted by: Stephen Pritchard on 17 October 2013

I have just used Bliss to sort out my album art and genres list, but it also seems to move my albums around renaming them with underscores between title words and not naming the tracks.  I now have 170 albums messed up this way.  Has anyone else had a similar problem?
I dont really want to re-rip (dbpoweramp on to QNAP NAS) but looks like I may have to.

I ran Bliss on my MacBook Pro, but I use dbpoweramp on a imac running windows; the QNAP runs Twonky.

Ya, I had the same issue. Just email him. There's a way (I think) to stop it from doing that.  Doesn't mess up playback, or the display of the album titles on the player in my experience.

PS - It will empty our your original folder "The Beatles" and move everything the into "The_Beatles"

Oh the joy of organising a digital music collection. I saw the writing on the wall early on in my switch from CD, there's no substitute for manually checking/editing tags and album art. Which wasn't very much fun when initially working through all 600 albums, but it doesn't seem too bad to fix things up before adding new albums now. Genre tags? There's a can of worms. Also very glad I decided to ignore genre tags entirely, instead simply leaving them blank.

Thanks for your comments - I'm waiting to hear back from Dan.

I wish I had not started, but at least it has not messed up my classical music. ... Yet!

I think you will find Dan very helpful - he sorted out some issues that I had with Bliss in its first incarnation - 20 minutes over Skype - that is customer service.

You can tell Bliss to either automatically organise your files or do it manually yourself. I'm not sure what the problem with using underscores is at all - it doesn't create any issues to playback and is much better than leaving spaces between words - a throwback to linux/unix perhaps but no problem surely.

I'll take a stab.  In the "old days" file naming conventions did not permit spaces.  Not every bit of every current operating system supports all of the new-fangled file naming conventions.  Old ways are the best ways to ensure compatibility across operating systems (uServe running a version of Windows; my nas running a version of Unix; my laptop runs OS X) and to avoid file name-caused glitches.

I've posted rather extensively about my experiences with the uServe and non-conventional file naming.  They don't mix 100% of the time.  No spaces, no funky characters (such as >, ? etc), ensures good results.

The _ symbol has long been used and is the legacy way of creating a space.

From a random bit of file naming advice I read:  "Where possible avoid spaces in filenames (though not strictly necessary, they can complicate things, especially if scripting). You are best advised to stick to alphanumerics, underscores, hyphens, periods. Do not use a hyphen or a period as the first or last character of a filename as this can have special meaning on some OSs (e.g. a starting period often indicates the file is hidden or system file that is not displayed to non-admin user accounts)."

Vortexbox operates in this way as standard when naming folders and files. I guess that's why bliss complements it so well.
