Hello,

Which version - CD - do you recommend? It's for a seven year old.

Thank you for your help.

Cheers,

OW

This is the one I got for my kids, when they were little.

A favorite version is the Decca set narrated by Ralph Richardson, but probably engraved on my heart is the Disney set with narration by Sterling Holloway, a thick slab of vinyl from the late 60s and back to back with Dukas'  Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Never too early to rock....

Phil Collins on drums,

Percy Jones bass and a cast of rock legends.

Manfred Mann as "Peter,"

Eno playing "The Wolf ,"

Stephane Grappelli is "The Cat,"

Gary Moore and Alvin Lee as "The Duck,"

Gary Brooker "The Bird,"

Phil Collins, Bill Bruford and Cozy Powell play "The Hunters,"

Jack Lancaster "The Grandfather."

I'm a self-confessed slut for Telarc's jaw-dropping sound quality, so my recommendation would be:

My children (10 and 8) enjoyed this when they were younger. The Young Person's Guide coupling is an excellent children's choice as well. The CD is also stuffed with index points, so your children can work out what part of the story or instrument they're listening to from the CD player display.

On Vinyl or CD

Peter and The Wolf = the voice of Peter Ustinov for me.  Here's the original on vinyl, but it's been reissued many, many times and readily available on CD;

Thank you for the recommendations.

I found the Bowie and Ustinov versions that are on YouTube and prefer the former. Thinking of getting two versions; Bowie plus another. I'll give Ustinov another listen; I do like him but he seemed too relaxed.

Ebor/Mark,

The Previn; how is the voice level? Any need to adjust the volume during the piece?

Thanks again,

OW

Sorry for the delay in replying...

No problem that I've ever noticed. I've just put it on to check, and it sounds great: like Previn's sitting next to you in the front row of the concert hall whilst the orchestra do their thing. Telarc can do little wrong in my eyes (ears): the bass drum thumps have that real infra-bass thing that you hear in the concert hall. Just great, and it's going cheap in Amazon marketplace at the moment.
