DAC to MAC
Posted by: Sundance on 28 October 2013
I'm planning to purchase CA-DacMagic 100 to connect between MacBook Pro and 282. I have no idea what cables I need to connect it all. The DAC only comes with mains.
Thanks

Hello Sundance,
Given the (excellent) quality of your current Naim gear and the plans you have for new speakers (cfr other thread), I don not believe the DacMagic would do justice to your system. It will probably disappoint you at some moment.
ideally you'd g. For something of nDac or Dac V1, but if your budget doesn't allow you might want to look at 2nd hand Rega DAC or Arcam Dac. Both are also very good.
cheers,

Sundance,
it appears to have pretty much everything you could need to connect up.
You need a usb type A to usb type B cable from MacBook Pro to DacMagic, then RCA phono leads to the 282. Naim philosophy would be RCA to DIN but that probably comes more expensive.

Why not go for the AudioQuest Dragonfly? It's about $100 less than a Dac Magic, more up to date and has gotten amazing reviews. You also save on one cable, as it plugs right into your Mac's USB port. Also works with headphones when just using your computer.
you only need a mini jack > RCA cable (aka an "iPod" cable) that goes from a mini headphone to 2 RCA cables. tons of options.
I would also look at the HRT Micro Streamer (£160). Punches well above its size and price. Some reviewers even prefer it to the excellent Dragonfly.
If you are going to only use the dac with your computer have a look at the HiFace Dac mde by an Italian company M2Tech, it is asyncUSB at 24/384, I use one with my IPad, and sometimes inmy mainsystem, about £180.

Presently keen on the M2tech hi face USB. Nice tidy setup with few cables. I'm gonna give this a try first and have a listen. Can we only get these from Italy?
