But which one is ............. Jethro Tull?

Greetings; fans of the inventor of the seed drill. For those of you who are not aware, I must alert you to Steven Wilson's newly released remaster of 'Benefit'. It is an absolute gem. The master tapes were baked (yes, really) to allow them to be re-run and digitised. Then the work could begin.

Mr Wilson uses 1970's sound processing devices where possible to retain the essence of the original sound, producing what simply sounds like a delightfully cleaned-up version of the album, without the usual awful over-compression and blanket de-noising employed by many remastering engineers. It contains some great bonus tracks and Hi-Res mixes on a DVD too.

'Stand Up' next please.

Make this man 'Tapefinder General'.

Hi John,

I have just finished comparing the Steven Wilson remaster on vinyl with the original first press I have. The new version is very good but, as usual, the 1st press remains better. It is good enough for everyday listening and I preserve my reserve my 1st press for serious listening

That's fair comment Steve, and I'm not surprised. My comparison was wholly CD based because I don't have a decent (original) vinyl copy.

I've given up with new vinyl, so I got the CD.

Good listening.

Ah; hang on Steve. Mis-filing incident alert. I do have a fairly original looking vinyl copy. It's not a g/f sleeve, but an A3/B2 pressing on the green Chrysalis label - so I'll look forward to spinning that up later.

There's stuff scratched out in the run-out grooves. Wanna get nerdy?

Oh, you digital types don't know what you're missing. The joy of dealing with a dirty needle and all.

No dirty needles here John. The joys of a KM RCM.

Getting nerdy, your copy is a second or third press but is still sufficiently early enough to be a decent sounding LP. See what you think of it against your CD reissue. With having the best CD replay available in the 555 it's a fair test.

Don't forget to clean the LP and your needle first though.

Yes, Mr Wilson. I'd like a remaster of Stand Up next as well, please. Very pleased with your  Benefit and Aqualung remasters.

Thanks, Steve. I always get those three variations all mixed up.
