Streamer wish list
Posted by: engjoo on 08 November 2013
What do you like to see in the next gen streamer? For me, it would be:
1) Better display (higher resolution, able to display more characters)
2) Auto firmware update via internet
For the Fast-forward and rewind buttons on the remote to actually do something! Come on Naim... many thousand dollar streamer and they don't even work. This is lame...
Secondly... and this may be more appropriate for the N-Stream wish list but it would be great if there was a UPNP "bookmark" feature. So if say... I'm halfway through an album and someone switches to using the NDX as a DAC, I can then return to the exact place I left the album and resume playing
1. An option for 3 external power supplies
2. DSD
3. Limited Edition series with orange lights.
Just one:
The n-Stream app allows you to remotely control Naim streaming products from your iOS and ANDROID devices.
I'd like to see a DSD capability.
I'd like to see album art HDX style in the display preferably colour, and configurable display info as I get with my cheap £100 network renderers. I would also like to see bit rate on display when connected to external digital source as well as adjustable buffer for web radio. And of course inbuilt Airplay and Android support for the controller.

Just ask your dealer !
- Async USB DAC for a complete solution.

-Seamless updating through the internet. The process is currently a mess. Naim should take lessons here.
-The possibility to browse for the UpnP library while using another input.
-The possibility to get back to the same song at the same place after switching inputs.
no internal dac
shoe-box-size
display with album-art
1. Excellent sound quality
2. large touch screen in small package (same form as SBT)
3. Extensible by plugins for e.g. Spotify
4. Choice of optical and co-ax for SPDIF
5. Controlled by excellent iDevice interface, or excellent third party apps
6. Made by Naim
7. iDevice control of NAC via streamer
Wat, if you had a generic web app, then you would need Java, ActiveX or. Flash to perform the executable code. The controller is clearly not a simple passive/stateless device. In which case you are still going to have platform variants and more complexity. In my experience it's safer to port a build to known platforms.
of course if Naim published the APIs then we could develop our own (for those who can) or select a third party controller as well as use Naim's preferred controller, Nstream.
Perhaps I should add published API to my list of asks.

I like the n-stream and naim quality and service but no need for internal dac
2 box, streamer only
ND5(without dac-section and internal psu) +XP5 level and less than €3000,-
Tom
Assorted streaming services like Spotify,Napster,Last.Fm etc integrated into nStream app for navigation, and playback through the streamer.
1) Web interface - or at least a published API so others can make their own
2) Remote control FWD/RWD buttons to work
Otherwise its a great piece of kit.
2) The capability to build a database from the audio files stored on an attached USB drive and write the database on that drive.
Integration of Qobuz streaming Service
Reference shoebox Dac please.

Reference shoebox Dac please.

Will our wish finally be granted? I would like a shoebox Dac-Pre at 282 or 252 level too please.
Above NDS level for me please and not worried about pre inclusion.
G
A reference level shoebox dac - you already have one by the way.
I'm off to the supermarket for some food - "finest" obviously.
Tog
Tog - I agree - 'Reference' is relative and I would expect it to constantly be evolving.
We have two DAC type references at present with Naim; DAC/555PS and NDS/555PS/555PS. They do slightly different things in the the front end - but are DACs none the less and are quite different in style - very noticeable on topflight (reference?) systems.
I wish Naim to keep their NDS type sound style for those who are in heaven with it - and those that find the DAC/555PS character simply divine - then a revised DAC would be great improving on all that is specific with that character.
Theoretically the two styles should coalesce at some point - I doubt that will happen - so whilst its a compromise I hope Naim continue to evolve the two styles - as clearly Naim customers appreciate the distinction in terms of preference. The portfolio should allow this without (too much) confusion, as you have the DAC line and the streamer "ND" line.

Only 3 things which I think they really lack. All already mentioned but these are my vote.
1. Spotify (as part of a selection of services). If it's too low def and not wanted by owners of Naim kit, why do they keep asking for it?
2. Android versions of the remote control apps. Not everyone wants to buy into Apple standards and equipment.
3. Firmware updates through the internet connection.
Soren why the abhorrence of Mac standards and equipment?
A Mac Mini attached to your Naim would give you Spotify - Apple Remote would provide an excellent control point (Remoteless for Spotify) for your music library with Audivana + providing all the audiophile bits iTunes forgot to include.
I'm speaking not as a fanboy but as someone who has used Macs since the early eighties -( well OK perhaps I was a fanboy back then - a very lonely place to be at the time)

For me it would have to be a display like the SBT - large clear and with options on how the display looks. Most importantly this would include scrolling of long track titles - essential with classical music - just look at the length of titles of movements in say some off the Beethoven String Quartets.
Also on internet radio track title and artist should be displayed - again just like the SBT.
These options weren't available when I tried the ND5XS and this was a factor in going for the nDAC and SBT (plus I think better sound). if these features are or become available then it may be time to look at a new streamer.
