Does nStream with UnitiQute support multiple users and iTunes Libraries on NAS?

Posted by: Alex Mayer on 11 November 2013

I am searching for a good streaming amp and got multiple recommendations from friends to have a look into the Naim Uniti or UnitiQute. Each family member has it´s own iTunes library located on one big NAS. nStream seems to be a pretty good app to operate the system.

1. Does nStream allow multiple users operating one Uniti?

2. Does nStream support mutiple iTunes Libraries and how are they identified?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to your feedback, Regards

Yes - but not at the same time.

nStream doesn't interface with iTunes directly. It does it via a UPnP server. If each family member has a Mac with an iTunes library then just run a UPnP server (such as Playback) on each Mac and select the appropriate UPnP server from nStream.

Hi James,

thanks for the quick reply. Point is that I want to access the iTunes libraries on the NAS with the MACs beeing offline. So I understand that I need a NAS with a UPnP server. But then the question still is: Can I access multiple iTunes libraries by this UPnP server or do I need one UPnP per iTunes library?

Thanks again, regards

Alex

Hi Alex - ah ok. I would think in this case you would point the UPnP server at the top level of the directory where all the libraries reside and then it would index them from there. I'm sure someone will be along soon to explain more.

I'm interested in this too....about to enter the world of Naim streaming and want to be able to access different libraries located on a NAS too. Hopefully someone can answer the question!

I'm definitely not an expert, but I thought the way iTunes libraries work is that the library is a users's individual view on a on the same underlying files.

So Alex if on your NAS you have one folder that all the underlying files are in, then you point the uPnP server at that.  So as James says but substitute the word "files" for "libraries".

Where you may run into trouble is if the uPnP server on the NAS needs the files in a strict artist / album / song type structure.

If you have let iTunes manage the folder structure then I think it should be like this, ie when your various family members rip a CD or download a track iTunes will put all the content in this sort of file structure if you have that option turned on.

If you don't have that option turned on and each family member puts content into their own folder structure then you could have duplicate artist folders for example which might confuse the uPnP server.

Is there really such a thing as an "iTunes expert"?  Isn't the purpose just to play music?

Hi guys,

yesterday I got my UnitiLite - early christmas for me this year! I learnt that access to iTunes libraries works through UpNP running on my NAS. So mulitple user´s iTunes libraries seems to be a challenge. Question now is if I can configure multiple UpNP servers on the Uniti?

Thanks, regards
