Trying to initiate 322 upgrade to the software on my nac 172. Downloaded software from naim, so far so good, connect usb from 172 to PC, Naim software asking for appropriate driver. I don't recall the 172 coming with any driver disc. I thought this would have been pre installed on the 172. Where does one get the driver To complete the required task.
Do you mean the USB-serial driver that's linked in the update package's PDF?

The NAIM download must've consisted of 2 files, one being the Updater, and the second being a .pdf document which gives you instructions. It tells you where to get the Driver Or how to check if you already have the capability.
Mind you the Updater download which you have is just that, an Updater, and it will enable you to download and install the actual Update software 'directly' into your streamer without storing it on your PC (or thousands of others).

When I begin and open the updater am asked to select which serial port to use (i am using USB b to USB ) in the drop down box it is blank with no port to choose, it says I may need to instal drivers.

Yes it does, if you read the .pdf document it walks you through the whole process quite nicely, and has ample screenshots to make it easier.
You will also need a 'USB B' to 'USB mini' cable.
I urge you to read the document that came with the Updater download.
By way of explanation, the driver is required to open a temporary port in the PC to facilitate only this update, it then closes the port and returns the PC to it's original state.
Doesn't work,,,,reboot 2x and still no USB to choose, I installed both drivers and the Naim update SW. In the "About this Mac" I can see only a Bluetooth USB Host Controller...

Same here,giving up life's too short. May go back to cd can't be doing with all this update lark. Last time I updated userve it broke.

My NDX is locked in firmware update mode. i can still use it but can't get past the second lot of files in the update process due to communication issues. I had the same problem with 3.21 and it spent a month in Salisbury as a result! I'm underwhelmed.
