Christmas is coming...

...so what music do you keep for this time of year? I really can't stand the overplayed tosh that oozes out of shops like stale farts at this time of year (Merry Christmas Everyone, I Wish It Could Be The Same Irritating Chorus Every Day, that sort of thing), so I thought we could offer rather better suggestions to each other for Seasonal Listening.

I came across these two on this very forum, and have enjoyed them hugely:

1) Ultra-lounge Christmas Cocktails

2) Mary Chapin Carpenter: Come Darkness, Come Light

And here's what I 've been listening to for years at this time of year:

3) Danny Elfman: Edward Scissorhands OST (overused on adverts, but great away from the TV screen)

4) Nine Lessons & Carols: King's Cambridge/Cleobury (I like the 1998 recording - does anyone have the more recent one, or older ones for that matter?)

5) Carols from Trinity: Trinity Cambridge/Marlow (currently available on Amazon for £35 new, or 1p used!)

What would you add to the list?

Shame on you all.

Lets get past November please

Shame on none of us. If I don't get some recommendations now, how can I get copies ordered in time for the main run up to Christmas? It's not like we're forcing you to join in, or listen to any of this yourself, is it?

Try recording a Christmas carols CD on a hot August afternoon before you start getting all miseryguts on us...

Mark,

Could be worse. Try the Beatles' Christmas album compilation.  Aside from the lads' energy, it may make you wish for the traditional tosh.

Here are my usual suspects which I only play once this time of the year:

1. Vince Guaraldi Trio: "The Christmas Song"

2. Toys Original Soundtrack: “The Closing of the Year”

3. Harry Nilsson “Son of Schmilsson” : Remember (Christmas )

4. Cyrus Chestnut, Blessed Quietness: "Amazing Grace"

5. Donald Fagan Kamakiriad: "Snowbound"

6. Ramsey Lewis Trio Sound of Christmas: "Winter Wonderland"

7. Patti Austin: "This Christmas"

I also have to admit to never growing tired of John& Yoko or Slade at Christmas, 2 songs that still transport me back.............

Why Bruce? That's the very worst of the lot - along with "Come on Eileen" and the Spands' ghastly "True", "FTONY" is probably the worst and most irritating record ever ever made. It's like being stuck in a stalled elevator with a maudlin tramp.

You should try "Praying For A Cheaper Christmas" by The Swinging Buildings (it's on YouTube). Made in 1981, but the true spirit of Xmas in 2013.
