Nstream alternative for OS X

Posted by: RobinH on 18 November 2013

I've been using QuteControl on my MacBook Pro for about a year now, however, the developers - Free Ride Coding - have confirmed that they have no plans to onward develop this simple but effective (for my requirements) app.

Anyone got a recommended Nstream alternative that will run on OS X?

I would like to try this app but cannot get it via the App store in Canada. Although I use n-Stream having a desktop app could be convenient at times.

What features are you wanting? There must be a UPnP control point for Mac OS X (google suggests songbook might work) and I got the impression jriver was meant to support being a control point.

Kinsky is a decent option for OS X.

I have the Qute Control on my NACN172XS, just downloaded Kinsky to my MacBook Air and it works and looks quite nice, thanks Orangutan for the suggestion

Dear All

Thanks for your suggestions. I've downloaded Kinsky and it's working nicely with my Qute (or should that be Kute???)

A Linn app controling a Naim device - it just all seems so wrong.

Well I installed Kinsky for OS X, and all it controls is my TV (Samsung)! I have no idea how it can control my tv -- I had no idea that my tv could be controlled by a network controller.  But although it seems to "see" my Qute, I can't select it / control it.

I have tried Kinsky and it works pretty well. Seeing I cannot acquire QuteControl, I'll have to reinstall Linn's app.

You must have a "smart" TV. Your Samsung is a DLNA ready set.

Yes, Kinsky looks out for UPNP/DLNA devices of which the Uniti* and your TV are examples.

UPNP doesn't usually account for volume control but fortunately Linn's implementation of this seems to be compatible with Naim streamers too.

Why not use choose a UPnP server for OSX and continue using nStream?

Options I am aware of are:

Asset UPnP: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/sh...-Asset-UPnP-For-OSX-(MAC)

There will be a new beta version on Monday according to Spoon...

Playback: http://www.yazsoft.com/products/playback/

As PCS suggested JRiver is being developed for OSX too: http://www.jriver.com/download.html

Asset might be your best bet, although JR is getting good reviews as well.

Forget the rest, unless you love messing around...

I have a QNAP NAS and use n-Stream but its nice to have choices and use a desktop app instead of an iPhone/iPad to control playback on occasion.

I have tried all of the suggestions you mentioned in the past but looking for a low cost (or free) desktop app. Hence, the interest in QuteControl.

Just tired J River and it's very buggy with OSX Mavericks, not very usable but it seems to offer endless features. Looking forward to trying the new beta release of Asset next week.

Ok, I see. Don't Naim have a DTC now too or is this just for nServe and not nStream?

Worth remembering that both Asset and JRiver for OSX are still in development. Fair judgement should not be passed until their official release, me thinks. JR said end of 2013 when they launched the project. Not sure in how far they are on track or playing catch up on the original time  line.

Playback worked fine when I used it more than a year ago, albeit somewhat simple with the then still very rudimentary nStream...

I use the QuteControl on my MacBook Pro when I'm in "work mode" - rest of the time it's nStream on iPhone or iPad. The two things I really like about QC are;

1. I can use it to switch inputs - and get to see what I'm listening to on the radio

2. I can play the first track of a FLAC album and it will automatically play the rest of the album - none of this messing round with individual tracks - which is great for maximum playing time/minimum intervention
