N-serve Backup on OSX

Posted by: Burgy100 on 19 November 2013

Hello Naim people,

Since upgrading to the latest version of N-serve for Mac, I have lost the ability to back up my Cd collection, has anyone out there experienced this? I can make any folder as a store and recognises over my network but when it comes to making the folder as backup with the option button, I click on it and nothing happens and just stays in the network shares area. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Try it from the browser interface?

Many Thanks garyi,

I never gave that a thought, I will give it a try. I have to be honest I have had other issues with this software before as my backup is WD MyBook firewired through my mac, as I have yet to get a nas. The issue has always been either a rights or path issue and always seems to be moving target. Many thanks

One thought, have you also upgraded your Mac to Mavericks? I did and lost access to all my SMB shares due to a bug in Apple's SMB2 implementation which became the new default. Synology came out with a fix over the weekend and all my Synology servers can be accessed again from my Macs.

Yep, I did upgrade to OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) and that is where my troubles begun, since then I have reverted back to mountain lion which has left me these ongoing and very annoying issues.

Even though you have gone back just try the following to ensure this is not the problem. use cmd k to bring up the go to server dialogue. Where you would normally use smb://192.168.n.n to access your share change it to cifs://192.168.n.n

CIFS always connects as SMB1

I am surprised that this persists after rolling back but worth a shot anyway. And it is a good solution for other mavericks users who have lost their NAS control.

It's working fine for me on Mavericks.

The only tip I can think of immediately is not to be in too big a hurry - it can take a few minutes for the system to recognize and implement the changes you're making as you create a new folder, promote it to a store and a backup, etc.  It's sometimes not instant when you click the button in n-Serve, even though you think it should be.

Have got a bit further, but all I get now on any folder is "unable to convert share IMAC-AC***\new naim backup to music backup" It should'nt be this painful surely!

What, precisely, did you name the new folder?  Folder naming issues can prevent it from working right.

And do you have its permissions right on the nas?  You probably do but it's worth asking.

Hello Bart thanks for the reply..folder is called "new naim backup" I have given it the same permissions as the others, I cannot get any folder to be a music backup. I can get any of the folders to be a network share but not a host for the backup...It seems to have stopped working. Have rebooted server, have deleted and reloaded n-stream software. Everything has been working ok until 17.11.13...wait a moment, I uninstalled the WD MyBook software that evening, could my 6tb raid drive already be knackered by the uninstall?

By regressing to mountain lion i presume a clean install?

in which case make sure you have turned on sharing by smb?

Steve -- try making a folder without spaces in its name.  Really   No guarantees, but I have had these issues myself and was pulling out my hair 'til my IT professional friend took a look and said, "Start with the basics; use only alphanumerics and no spaces in your folder names," and voila my backup problems were over.

We've got a mix of unix, windows and OS X going on when we want our Mac to access a Synology nas via a uServe.  Each os handles folder and file names slightly differently, so resort to the lowest common denominator for naming conventions.  It worked for me and I hope it helps!

The other thing is not to try it as a store before making it a backup. If you try it as a store first, the Serve will add LQ, MQ and HQ folders, and once it contains folders it cannot be made into a backup.

I had similar problems back in the summer and there was a whole thread about it. If you look at that you may find some helpful tips. Other Forum members were incredibly helpful when I was pulling my hair out.

Hi Chaps,

Tried all methods. Best I can do is add the folder but status is always 'offline' and after it has added 'Naim' folder I get this message

..and I have tried with and without passwords. Like Bart said 'I am starting to pull my hair out"

Have you turned on smb sharing?

following the following

goto system prefs and sharing

click on options or advanced

turn on smb

back un sharing click the plus button

select the folder/ drive you want to share and make sure everyone one can read write.

give it another go,

if this fails look about on line for osx smb utilities. Basically apple got into a hohah about licences so decided to have a go at the protocal themselves, but its a bit shit.

really spend a hundy and get a nas.

garyi you are a bloody genius I reckon this is OSX 10.9 not integrating with my existing hardware and after further reading about how smb protocol does not work properly with osx and the you reaffirming the reports I heard about apple's smb protocol. So I downloaded SMBUp utility http://eduo.info/apps/smbup pointed to the folder and started the software services. Re did the file address for the folder and hey presto it works, well I'll be damned!!

Many Many Thanks.

No probs.

I just wish Microsoft and Apple would sit around a table and knock this out instead of all this crap the end user has to deal with.

Many Thanks to everyone for helping me, Backup still going and not even 1 error. Brilliant. Now what about network connections Cat5 or Cat6. See new thread.
