3.22 and only playing 3 tracks
Posted by: Mike1960 on 22 November 2013
Having been a lurker on this forum for several months I recently bought a ND5XS, my first new purchase in 15 years and it is wonderful. I did have the gapless issue on albums like dark Side of the Moon using firmware 3.21 but otherwise no problems.
2 days ago I updated my firmware to 3.22 on my iMac. This went smoothly with no problems (although the screen shot from the helpfile for System Information on the iMac was different from mine this seemed to make no difference).
On powering up the ND5 it seemed to play normally and playing DSofTM showed the gapless issue has been resolved.
However I have now noticed that after the first 3 tracks of an album it just stops playing. I can then use nStream to select the next track "play from here" and the next 3 tracks will play and then it stops again! I don't recall being able to play a whole album since the upgrade. Any ideas? I stream from a Synology NAS DS212j and have made no changes to this or any other component since.
Regards,
Mike

I don't know if this is a coincidence or even vaguely related, but for what it's worth:
This evening the NDS began only playing one track at a time and stopping. After fiddling about with nStream and the front facia controls, I shut it down and powered down everything back to the hub, including the hub. After the restart normal service was resumed. I've never had this happen before and it did not appear off the back of any changes to the hardware, firmware or software.

Have tried powering everything down and it makes no difference. I can still only play 3 tracks at a time from an album. I have not tried making a playlist. Interestingly when I watch nStream as it is drawing to the end of the 3rd track it displays a message "Can't play, skipped track" and then stops.
If no one else is getting this issue then it looks like I will have to contact support.

Hi Mike -
Is this behavior with just one album, or all albums?
Just a thought -- have you also tried restarting your UPnP server?
Hook
PS - No problems here since upgrading to 3.22.

Clear the N-Stream's UPnP cache.

Firstly thank you to everyone who replied to my original post. I wanted to post an update as to where I am up to. I contacted Naim support regarding this problem and along the way have updated all firmware on my router and NAS drive, set up a temporary UPNP server on my Mac running a trial version of JRiver and found some interesting things. From a ripped FLAC file stored on my Mac HDD via JRiver the ND5XS was able to play an album all the way through. Using the same JRiver to serve a FLAC file stored on my NAS drive the original problem recurred of music stopping suddenly after every 3rd or 6th track.
Ripping a CD to MP3 128kbps on the NAS drive, this was then able to play all the way through but is obviously not a solution.
After discussion with Naim I then downgraded the firmware on my ND5XS back to 3.21 (a word of warning at this point, Naim state they would never usually recommend this but they felt the two versions were so similar that it would be safe to do).
So after all this.. the problem remains! It now looks very much as if there is an issue with my Synology DS212j and it's media server package. I am not that technical but as I see it, it seems to have developed a bottle neck and cannot serve high resolution files other than in short batches of 3 or 6. Once the resolution is dropped to a low bit rate it can cope.
I will take this up with Synology over the weekend but do not honestly know how far they will persue it. I hope I do not have to replace my NAS! It has been a real insight problem solving computer based audio when it goes wrong as opposed to a traditional CD/amp system.

Have you tried other UPNP servers on your NAS? I can highly recommend Minimserver. It's straightforward to setup on a Synology.

Thought I would close this one as I have now got it sorted. It turned out to be a router problem in the end. I ended up taking the ND5XS back to my local dealer and it worked flawlessly with a UnitiServe. I managed to borrow an old router which solved the problem on my network. I have now replaced my old router with a new one and am happy again! With hindsight there were some other subtle clues with odd emails not sending and my iPad occasionally messing around with nStream but I am amazed at how difficult this has been to solve. I wonder now how many other posts regarding faulty connections and drop outs are actually router issues? Thanks again for the replies.

I've had this too. It didn't have any negative effect on my music playback but other processes were fouling or failing because of intermittent router issues. It also took me a couple of weeks to nail the issue.
Glad yours is sorted.
