First digital download - incomplete transfer

Posted by: Clive B on 25 November 2013

I have bravely attempted my first digital download, a copy of 'Tales of Us' by Goldfrapp (owing largely to recommendations on this forum). I understand that I cannot download the metadata to see the album artwork, but worse than this, the Naim desktop client, n-serve and n-stream all show only 8 of the 10 tracks downloaded. Does anyone know why this should be?

The file took 75 minutes to download as a Zip file. I expanded the folder and saved all 10 tracks in a file in My Music on the hard drive of my PC. I then dragged and copied this folder into the Downloads folder on my NS01. In Windows Explorer I can see all 10 tracks in the Downloads folder, yet when I look in the Naim desktop client, n-serve or n-stream I only see the first 8 tracks.

I have re-copied the missing tracks using Windows Explorer, but this simply overwrites the files which are already there. Still they don't show on the Naim desktop client, n-serve or n-stream.

Any advice from anyone who's experienced this problem already?

Mmm... That sounds like the same problem, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try all that yet. May have to find someone with a copy of the CD and rip that instead!

As the owner of a music server, you will need to get brave and learn how to check and edit metadata (tags) and album art.

Tip #1 -- get it all right BEFORE you copy to the Downloads folder.

Tip #2 -- chose a metadata editor and learn how to use it.  dbPoweramp seems popular for the PC users, but I can't really comment as I do all mine with OS X (Macbook).

Editing tags and getting the album art right is not difficult but again, you'll need to be able to do it to fully enjoy your NS01.

Good luck!

Just make a backup first, then if you make a mistake you can go back to the original

In the linked thread mentioned by hafler3o, above,  gav111n says "Firstly, use DBPoweramp to clear ALL metadata and embedded artwork from the tracks. Presumably other metadata editing software will work just as well".

Since I rely upon the ripping process of the NS01 to rip CDs to the hard discs, it seems a bit over the top to buy DBPoweramp solely to edit metadata (unless it also rips DVDA files?). Is there any other metadata editing software that others are using which could be recommended?

Thanks, CB

Clive,

i have used a simple piece software called MP3TAG, to update metadata,  albeit in FLAC files on a NAS.   It is freeware, so may be worth a try.

+1 on MP3TAG. Good software, no cost.

Thanks for that, David and Solid Air. That could be my homework tomorrow evening...

Well I suppose I scored 5/10 for my homework.

I downloaded a metadata editor programme and followed Gav's instructions. Although I was unable to see any TAGs nor embedded artwork on any of the tracks, I clicked the 'Remove All Tags' option for every track. I then renamed every track following Gav's convention (in effect all I had to do was replace a full stop in the file name with a space, e.g. '01 Jo'). I then copied the album artwork as a JPG file, renamed it 'folder.jpg' and stored it in the album folder.

I now have 9 tracks (that's one track more than before) and the artwork. The tenth track '10 Clay' now appears in the DTC and on n-serve under an album called 'unknown' by an artist called 'Pro Tools'! And I am unable to delete it. Nor can it be played as I am unable to find it on n-stream.

Is there any way to delete tracks or albums from the downloads folder?

Thanks, CB

Hi CB

I downloaded the Goldfrapp album yesterday and noticed the same issue - the metadata for track 10 is different than all the others and has ProTools as the artist.  So you need to change the Artist and Album tags to Goldfrapp and Tales of Us and then you should be OK.

To delete files in Downloads on your NS01 I think you just use Windows Explorer to find the field then press delete.  That's what you do on a UnitiServe at any rate.

Personally I use MP3Tag to find the right album. It automatically retags all the data and produces an album cover if you need one. It's not totally simple but ok once you're used to it. I rarely now hand type new tagging data - you can also do that in Windows Explorer if you can be bothered.

All options are imperfect but this seems ok.

If I recall correctly, I had to re-tag (iTunes) to get them all 10 songs grouped as the one album. Usually, applying a common "album artist" tag brings them together in album view. I just sort the songs by "date added", pick the full track list and re-tag as a group.

Thanks for your help and advice guys. This is driving me nuts! I have just deleted the album from the downloads folder (using Windows Explorer), have retagged every track on the hard drive of my PC with the artist and album name using an application I found called 'Audio Shell Settings' which works within Windows Explorer, have dragged the folder into the downloads folder and...

I now have the first 9 tracks with the artwork (folder.jpg) and no 10th track. I think this is another step in the right direction, but it is so irritating. I can play the 10th track through the speakers on my PC, but it would be so good if it would attach itself to tracks 1-9 on the NS01 so that I could play it through the NDS.

Still, the first 9 tracks at least are growing on me!
