Qubuz

Posted by: Solid Air on 27 November 2013

I've seen in other threads that Qubuz is expected to land in UK next week. Good news. But I can't find any mention of integration of Naim streamers with the service. Lots about Sonos, nothing about Naim that I can see.

Thoughts/insights?

They open the store for us Germans too...

My biggest Problem with Qobuz is the Language! There is no Option for German or English.

Hi Solid Air,

If you check the thread 'why again are Naim streamers not supporting Spotify?' in Streaming Audio section, there was a post 2 days ago from Jan-Erik with a link to a Qobuz document.

Have a look in there and you will see Naim mentioned by Qobuz as an integration partner.

(I would post the link myself if I could work out how to do it on an iPad!)

Here's the link again (in French):

http://blogs.qobuz.com/qobuzbl...-futurs-innovations/

In essence (via Google translate with minor corrections) :

Qobuz launches internationally on 1 November 2013 !

At that time the streaming will be available, in addition to France, Germany, United Kingdom, Austria, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Qobuz also announced a complete overhaul of mobile applications (iPhone, iPad, Android)...

Finally, Qobuz conducted demonstrations of its API, which is now a key part of its integration with its rich content in the audio-connected computer and many prestigious partners devices. Being integrated in Nu Force, Pro-ject, and Bluesound Nad, and coming soon on Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha, Sony, Parrot, Naim, Cambridge Audio and Linn.

"Coming soon on Naim"

(hopefully not a repeat of the Airplay announcement)

I have been using the (lossy) service on a free trial as I downloaded a Studio Master and they gave me 2 weeks free.  Using Sonos into the Naim NDX.

Interestingly I have submitted a query to them today as I am finding music missing on Sonos compared to their Windows Client.

In their contact form there is a selection of drop downs where you can supply information on the configuration of your system.

Under Media Player there is an option to Select Naim (NDX, NDX, ND5 XS).

It would seem that Qobuz are expecting Naim integration.

Gosh, that's quite exciting, although we have been here before when Paul Stevens announced Airplay for Naim streamers two years ago. Qobuz have already updated their software for Naim compatibility. All we have to do now is to wait for Naim to update theirs ..... and wait ..... and wait ......

Have checked yesterday a little bit their programm.

Geting a lot from ECM, Hyperion, Harmonia Mundi and Mirare would give great access to some very welcome classical recordings I'm not able to get with Spotify e.g.

As well a lot of the ECM stuff for Jazz is avaliable against Spotify.

Nit yet checked other genres

How are you accessing the service?

I'm using Sonos and have found that the catalogue is less on Sonos than on the Desktop Application and Android, this wasn't the case 2 weeks ago and I suspect a fault.

I raised this with QoBuz yesterday and got a one liner back saying it would be available from Mon 2 Dec, but checking this morning I had the same difference between the different platforms.  e.g. Chris Botti - none listed on Sonos but many albums listed on Android and the Windows application.

Anyone know how you access Qoduz on a Windows 8.1 PC or Andriod devices? I thought it was going to be available in the UK today but there's nothing obvious that I can find.

Thanks Ragman

I think they may have issues, there are posts on the Sonos and QoBuz forums regarding availability of tracks on Sonos and the dropdown country option hasn't been updated to include the UK.

Ragman

Thanks for the link which I used to download the app. However. I couldn't find an app in the Windows store.

Richard

Yes that has been my experience, re: dropdown list, this morning. Spotify for a bit longer then!

also you can go this way

http://player.qobuz.com/

However, I have created an account for testing.

Looking for e.g. Marc Andre Hamelin gives as result 4 recordings for streaming.

It's far behind from their recordings avaliable in the store!

For me this service by a price of 19,90€ is just interesting in case of a full avaliability to the whole catalog

Within the data sheet of the album sometimes you can find this text

Cet album est uniquement disponible à l'achat en téléchargement : le détenteur des droits ne souhaite pas qu'il soit disponible en streaming. Vous pouvez télécharger cet album, ou écouter des extraits de 60 secondes, en MP3 320.

Which says that the owner of the rights for this album only allows you to download the album and doesn't  allow streaming except for 60 sec of each track in mp320 format.

so not every single album can be streamed, but this is determined by the label and not by Qobuz.

cheers

Okay

This is a huge limitation and means that the service is very limited

Some recordings and Not avaliable for streaming in total

Posted on: 02 December 2013 by Mohamed Amin

Well I was waiting for the service to start in Ireland today and it did, the site detects your country and suddenly it is in English , signed up , one months free , streaming as we speak via their app on the ipad and using an app called streamflow that allows me to stream to Naim Uniti2 , sound  is good , I'm only listening for the last 30 min but shofar so Good although I suspect if it was direct connection it sound even better .Naim Uniti2 reads 705kb/s with a sample rate of 44.khz

Not sure why the 705 is it the limitation of the app I'm using ( streamflow ) most likely so will keep looking for a better one

I have been using Qobuz at CD quality, streaming through a Sonos connect then to my NDS via a Qued digital coaxial cable for month now. The sound is very close to that of the same record ripped to my NAS. I am waiting for Naim to offer a direct connection to Qobuz allowing to skip the use of the Sonos to get the same quality as streaming from a NAS.

Concerning the catalog, there are some albums which can't be accessed by streaming but my experience is that it is not the case for the vast majority of the music. I must say I like very much the service. It is just great and does justice to my gear. For most of the music I play streaming, I do not feel I have to buy. On top of that there are sometimes album that are also available in hidef studio masters files that can be downloaded.

Ragman

in my area of interest this was seen on a few labels, and not very many.

the first Hyperion additions to the catalog were like this, but I notice the more recent ones can be streamed.

the ECM catalog has this limitation quite often, and I don't know if any can be streamed.

but then the ECM New Series has album that can be streamed (and again some not).

overall I still think it is a good offer (I have the Hifi Classic so its a bit cheaper again).

cheers

I have been trialling now for 2 weeks now and switched to lossless yesterday.  My findings on sound quality are very similar to you.  If I compare QoBuz stream to a local copy using Sonos for both I cannot tell the difference, but when streaming the local file directly using the NDX streamer instead of Sonos the quality is a bit better.  I can't quite put my finger on the difference though, it seems to be more about engagement than anything else, a feeling of being there.  It is however very good indeed.

I'm having trouble with a difference in content available on Sonos compared to the other sources (Desktop client and Android).  For example Chris Botti, there is no content available on Sonos and plenty on the other clients, same with "Meet Me In London"  (Antonio Forcione & Sabina Sciubba).  2 weeks ago this content was available on Sonos. If you don't mind could you please check these 2 if you have a moment.  I believe it is a general issue as there is a post on the QoBuz forum about this and hopefully it will rectify soon.

If the missing content reappears then I will certainly be subscribing.  Let's hope that the integration into the Naim streamers appears at some point.

Have checked it a little bit more in Detail

With my test account:

Hyperion Records: Hamelin, Steven Osborn, Angela Hewitt, S. Hough

No recording in full, just samples, a lot of recordings missing

ECM: A. Schiff-Beethoven

NO recording in full, just samples, not all released recordings.

Mirare:

Found a lot in full, some recording with some tracks just as sample. E.g. Shoji Shostakovich VC

Artist:
Vilde Frang (Nor Warner or EMI recording avaliable)

Naive:

I I have checked was avaliable

Thx,

Alex,

I explored various solutions to stream CD quality music from Qobuz into my NDS. I list them here in increasing order of quality. I have a Mac.

1) The simplest way to do it is to stick a Toslink optical cable in your Mac audio out, if you have one, at one end and to the UQ at the other. It is cheap but you do not have any remote. Sounds Ok though.

2) Connect you computer via a HiFace USB/digital coaxial interface and then into the UQ. A bit more expensive but the sound is definitively better. Still has the remote problem. Moreover, the HiFace does not currently work with Mac OS Mavericks. The maker of the HiFace is working on a cure which should be a few weeks away.

3) Set up a Sonos connect (hardwired) into your network. It sound great, though not on par with my NDS playing from the NAS. It is in my opinion a fantastic way to listen to much music. It can be controlled from a Mac and, I guess, a PC, an iPhone, Android or an iPad. Soundwise its the best solution. It is the most convenient because Sonos has worked with Qobuz. Playlists can be transferred from Qobuz to Sonos. Whenever I really like an album, I download it in AIFF format, eventually in Hidef.
