UnitiServe - always on?

Posted by: Evlampi on 27 November 2013

Good evening!

I have some questions regarding the UnitiServe usage:

Do you shutdown your UnitiServe after each listening session?

Is it safe for the unit to be always on - like the other Naim components.

Since there is HDD or SDD in the UnitiServe - is leaving it on 24/7 a good idea considering the longevity of the unit or the hdd/sdd?

Thank you

I seem to recall that Phil Harris might have mentioned that more stress is placed on the harddisk during start up compared to leaving the device constantly on. This would be consistent with the following advice from Naim's Knowledge Base :

UnitiServe

Switching off the Naim UnitiServe from its rear panel power switch is not normally necessary unless it is being un-installed, so you can leave it on all the time. It can be put into shutdown mode by touching the front panel logo for five seconds.

The UnitiServe may take up to one minute to enter shutdown mode during which time the shutdown button will flash.  The shutdown button will remain lit when the UnitiServe is in shutdown mode. Wait until the shutdown mode stops flashing and remains lit before switching off the UnitiServe from the rear panel mains switch.

Never switch off the UnitiServe from the rear panel power switch or unplug it from the mains supply unless it is in shutdown mode.

The theoretical part is ok. Just wondering how many of you keep the UnitiServe always on.

I`ve seen complains about overheating etc...

Hi Ev,

I have had mine for 14 months and other than a week here and there when I have been on holiday, it has been on continuously. It gets hot nearer the back but no more than my Apple Time Machine or the Cable Box which also has a hard drive.

I leave mine on all the time as well. It's a little warm, but no more than the SuperUniti. I'd just leave it on if I were you, and stop worrying.

Mine is on 24/7, along with my Supernait and HiCap, unless there are thunder storms around.

I think most people leave theirs on all the time. I do. Yes, gets a little warm but never feels too warm, even on a hot Summers day when the ambient in the house is several degrees warmer.

Thank you guys, the dilemma seems to be solved

I want my serve to be warm as possible for the best sound. It takes a few days for the warmup to get up there just like all the rest of the Naim stuff.
