deleting albums from unitiserve

Posted by: LML on 28 November 2013

Still getting used to my new Unitiserve.  Can someone tell me the easiest way to delete albums.  I've transferred an enormous amount of music into the downloads folder and would like to filter out what I no longer want.  Not seeing how to delete.

Thanks

Have a look in the desktop client. You can delete CD rips in the app, but not downloads. Even with the former, you still need the DTC to empty the trash.

So does that mean you can not modify what's in the downloads at all (I know you can't back up the downloads when you backup what's on the server, which I thought was odd).  It's available to listen to but the functions on the DTC are essentially for the server only?

I'm not 100% certain! but pretty sure you can delete stuff with the DTC.

You would think so.  I just went to my DTC to the Music library and I looked at 2 copies of the same CD.  One was transferred to the Downloads folder from a previous music server and one was ripped from the CD onto the naim US.  If I highlight the first one (in downloads) and go to edit the "delete" option is grayed out.  If I highlight the second one (on the naim server) and go to edit I could delete it. But it's the first one I want to get rid of.  This may seem trivial but there are a lot of CDs in my downloads folder with incomplete metadata.  There's no easy way to update them so I was just going to rip the CD again and then delete the copy in the downloads folder.  There are ~300 CDs I want to do this for.  You would think this would be a trivial function on such an expensive device.  Go figure.

Deleting is as simple as adding -- just drag and drop.

When the share (Downloads is a "share") is scanned, the software will see that it's gone.

Hey Bart:  on my HP laptop with DTC if I open up the music library the icons for two duplicate albums show up.  One is on the US server and one is in Downloads.  Only the one on the server can be deleted.  Neither one allows me to click and drag.  I need to highlight the one to delete and then go up to edit.  But the delete function is grayed out if I highlight anything in downloads.  Is it different for your unitiserve?

It should be the opposite.  The files ripped by the uServe are not able to be deleted this way, as they are protected (a permissions thing).  But the files in Downloads can be.  Maybe you're looking at them 'backwards?'

I appreciate that it seems to be working for you so it is possible that I'm doing something wrong at my end.  But I don't think it's what you suggest.  I can tell from the icon which CD is in downloads and which is on the server.  The downloads one has a small blue square on the CD.  I can also tell by looking at the location under information.  Additonally, if I connect to the naim using my MacBook via the local network (a much more user friendly interface) you can browse through music (all music, both on the server and in Downloads).  But if you navigate to "Manage Music" and then to "Delete Music" it only shows what is on the server.  It automatically limits it and won't show me what is in downloads to delete.  So it seems there are two independent observations where the software won'l allow deleting music which is in Downloads.  Any other thoughts.  Can you confirm the above on your device?

I use a Macbook as well.  In Finder, when I browse to my uServe, I see only two top-level folders -- Music and Downloads.  When I further browse into Downloads, I can delete any of those folders and files, or copy to them.  Indeed, that is how I add files to my Downloads folder.  I can see, but cannot delete from or copy to, the MQ folder within Music, which is where the server rips to.

I'm 99.999% sure that what I describe above is exactly how it's supposed to work.  I've got no idea what "Manage Music" and "Delete Music" refers to in connection with using Finder to browse uServe folders, sorry!  But it leads me to believe that there is something not exactly right with what you're doing, or how your uServe is on your network or 'seen' by your computers.

Are you using Finder to browse to the uServe contents, or the web interface?  Use Finder.  You may need to 'mount' the uServe if you've never used Finder to get to its files. Do that in Finder by using the Go menu, and under that "Connect to Server."

Hey Bart.  Great, that worked. I have to admit I rarely use finder for this sort of thing but accessing the US that way allowed me to look at all folders and delete or move or add.  Now that I think about it that's how I originally moved all of my music from an external HD to the downloads folder.

That said, I've been disappointed with the various interfaces to use the US.  The DTC was made for a PC however I've been told by Naim that the n-Serve app is essentially the same as the DTC but meant for Mac.  Truth is, on my Macbook I have the n-serve app which has an interface I don't like, similar to the DTC on my HP laptop.  If I access the US directly by putting the IP address into Safari it comes up with the beautiful interface (black and green) with intuitive buttons.  However, that's where it seemed most of the functions were limited to what's on my server and not in the Downloads folder.  Perhaps I'm still missing something basic but there isn't any instruction manual for this sort of thing.

Have you assigned a static IP address to your Naim.  If so, could you tell me how to do it with my Macbook.  I use an Apple Extreme router.  Naim told me I should do that because every day my US becomes un-discoverable until I turn it off and back on.  Seems to have something to do with DHCP.  Any thoughts?

I meant Apple Airport extreme.  Sorry.

Hi LML,

I have something similar happening. When the NServe app loses contact with the US can you still look at the US using Finder?

I thought I had a network problem but now I'm a bit confused because the connection problem exists for the iOS app, the OSX app and the browser, but NOT for Finder. Phil Harris is looking at this at the moment.

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Tim:  I'm expecting a call from Phil this week to discuss this problem.  His colleague felt that assigning a static IP address to the US would fix it.  If you hear of anything else please post it.  It's nice to know I'm not the only one experiencing some of these issues.

Cheers

Sorry if i am being a plank but this has been answered has it not? If you don't want an album that you copied to the downloads folder, imply remove if from the downloads folder (via the mac finder)

I've used the firmware in my home router to fix the IP address it assigns to my uServe.  The Apple Airport Extreme surely can do this -- you'll have to read its manual, or online guides, or just browse around the interface, to find out how.

Further there is a Naim software tool on the uServe's home page to make the IP address static.  I've not used that one yet but many here have.  It is Windows-only I believe.

Used the Airport Extreme utility to fix the IP address for the US.  Now that I understand what to do it wasn't that difficult.   Haven't had any problems since.  All other devices have been able to find the US for the past 3 days.  I wish this was made clear in the setup manual.  Thanks.
