Another Apple TV connection question

Posted by: Shropshire Hills on 29 November 2013

My Hifi is about 4m from the TV and BRP. I also have an Apple TV and, until recently, I had this sat near the TV and linked to it with a 1m HDMI lead. I then ran an optical lead from the TV to a Cambridge Dac which was adjacent to the Apple TV.

I have now sold the Cambridge Dac and have a Naim Dac in the hifi system and want to run an optical lead from the Apple TV direct to this Dac to keep the TV processing away from the audio (for TV, Netflix, blue Ray and music streamed via iPhone and iPad).

My question is this - is it better to keep the Apple TV close to the TV and run a 5m optical lead (chord Optichord or similar) to the Naim Dac or should I place the Apple TV near the Dac, connected by a 1m optical lead, and run a 5m HDMI lead from the Apple RV back to the TV? I tend to think the former is better both sonically and visually but am not sure and would appreciate advice from others who have 'been there before'.

Thanks

Bob

I think I'd go with a shorter HDMI and longer optical. However, given properly constructed (which doesn't necessarily mean expensive) leads, it shouldn't matter at those lengths.

Thanks Jobseeker - the leads are probably similar in price but I wondered if the Apple TV and its ps would have a negative impact on the hifi.

Hi Wat

Thanks for the advice which agrees with Jobseeker.  The current Apple TV, which I have, uses a Toslink optical out rather than a mini Toslink which is a pain as I already have a mini toslink to toslink 5m Chord optichord sitting in my hifi spares drawer

Thanks
