Anyone getting the DireStraits remaster on Vinyl?
Posted by: MangoMonkey on 05 December 2013
Debs got it, Mohit. There are posts on it in the Music Room under "What was the last vinyl you bought" Given that the set is mastered by Bob Ludwig and pressed at Pallas, it should sound fantastic. Thing is, the original vinyl also sounds fantastic. Not sure how much room there is to improve.
If you head to Half Price Books in Redmond, I have no doubt you'll find at least half, and possibly four or five of the Dire Straits LP catalog on original vinyl in VG or better shape for about $3-5 an album. That's maybe $25 for the set. You do the math.
Dire Straits's original vinyl stand among the best sounding rock LPs from the analog era, IMBO (in my bombastic opinion) .
Not sure how these compare to pressings from a couple of years ago. They were remastered from the original analogue master tapes by Bernie Grundman. These sounded great and better than the originals.
Talk about milking it......
As I said in the Music Room. What's the point?
The point is record company can make an easy profit from the box set than a single release.
Agree with Steve J. Never been that interested in DS but if you can get an original album for 99p why on earth would you buy the record co money spinning release? Unless you are really, really stupid?
MM,
All my dire straits box set LPs are now cleaned, re-sleeved, and been listened too.
It's a very good set, fantastic SQ, well made vinyl, and pleased to see no warping in my set.
Also, the price on Amazon has come down to £69 now, and maybe it will drop again in the new year which makes it a far safer bet and superb value for money compared to old scratched up knackered ones from the local charity shop of horrors.
The nay-sayers above are not talking from a position of having experienced this LP edition so their opinions are extremely compromised to say the least, and imo anyone would have to be really really stupid to believe that 1000s of copies of original dire strait albums in mint condition are easily obtainable by anyone, anywhere in any 2nd hand vinly shop for 99p.
Six albums on 8 x LPs brand new in mint condition with fantastic SQ for £69 inc delivery.
Highly recommended : )

Debs,
Whatever makes you happy. Enjoy your box set!
Tony
I hear at least a couple of them are now spread out over 2 discs, so that should help lead to improved sound quality compared to the originals - and by the way you would have to really luck out to find "On Every Street" going cheap in a charity shop.

Debs,
Second hand vinyl does not necessarily mean charity shops, scratches and knackered. And who is the naysayer? You're talking from a position of no longer having the originals to compare to.
No body here but you claimed 1000s of mint condition LPs out there. Get out from behind the computer and go see for yourself before you call people's experiences really really stupid. Why do you think the price on Amazon has come down?

Indeed john,
On "Every Street" takes some persistence to find in VG condition. Exactly why I was carefull above to say "half, and possibly four or five" of Dire Straits' LP catalog.

It does at the 2nd hand vinyl & charity shops anywhere in my 25mile radius locality.
But the point is: The OP started this thread about the new vinyl of the ds box set so why aren't we talking about that?
And who is the naysayer?
People who have expressed doubt and negativity about the new ds box set, and done so with bias opinion [without so much as a hearing]. Should be ashamed of themselves they should.
You're talking from a position of no longer having the originals to compare to.
I don’t need to compare them. I’m not interested and far too busy enjoying the music on the new DS Lps, sound really good they do! : )

That wasn’t what i actually wrote, and doesn’t imply the meaning of what i wrote either.

experiences really really stupid.
Now you are being silly and very patronising
Firstly: in the last month - visiting my local 2nd hand vinyl shop, plus 3 charity shops, and a market stall, and the hours of Okki Nokki time cleaning shite old vinyl accounts for nothing to you then?
Some folk just can’t be pleased…
Secondly: I haven’t actually called anyone really really stupid, if you read into exactly what I wrote, although I may make an exception in your case, Joe ; )
Why do you think the price on Amazon has come down?
It’s gone back up again! : D
The price fluctuation is presently £82.17 on the Amazon stock market
But i stand by what i said before, i half expect it to go down, but this is because Dire Straits don’t have the big following they used to, lots of people don’t like the band anymore or have moved on, or maybe something to do with not being in vogue right now perhaps?
I've got it on order from England. It was 82 - 20% (no vat). Shipping was (surprisingly) just a few pounds.
Only problem - I don't have a TT. :-(
Debs,
I appreciate your response. Glad to hear you sort vinyl at the local shops. I figured you must have had the RCM for something other than cleaning new vinyl .
By all means enjoy DS on vinyl. I do. My s/h buys suit me fine and your new boxed-set works for you. Great for each of us.
Hopefully the OP and I can get together sometime soon to compare my s/h vinyl to his new boxed-set.

Compare two pressings? Almost like watching paint dry..
A friend of mine who is not naimless and don't post on here anymore [wish he would] has the originals and the new box set,
he told me the other day this new reissue set is better.
The way I look at it, no good can come out of doing the comparison (for me).
a) If the reissue is better - well, it's supposed to be, so no big deal
b) if it's not - I'll realize I've wasted the money.
Ignorance is bliss. ;-)
In all honesty, I bought it for the cool looking box, since I don't even have a TT anymore.
The reason I bought this set was because i don’t have any Dire Straits LPs in my present collection, so it makes sense to buy all the studio albums together and neatly contained in a nice package. The box set really is neat, [it looks cool to me too] and don’t worry about sound quality, you’re going to enjoy them!
You may need to buy another turntable first though

Debs - Is On Every Street now spread over 2 discs because the original was on one disc and a lot of it edited to fit in.

You're right, Mohit. I imagine it's similar to comparing WAV to FLAC to ALAC. Or comparing streaming cables. Or PC to NAS. Or where to put the PowerLine. Just seems to be what we do here.
To sweeten the deal, I'll make popcorn. Not microwave but the fresh stove top kind . And once we get the better pressings sorted we can rearrange my stacking order to see what's best there. Oh, it'll be a real hoot!
