HD Tracks - Now Available in the UK?

Posted by: endlessnessism on 17 December 2013

Perhaps everyone knows this already but it caught me by surprise.

I downloaded something from HD Tracks a couple of years ago.  I was in the UK at the time and there was no problem.  Then, although they kept emailing me about new releases, they started blocking downloads bu UK and EU customers.  I was able to download a few things on my laptop on trips to America but otherwise no luck.

Periodically I would try from the UK and then, without warning, I was able to download something the other day.  Perhaps it was a mistake - I haven't yet been back to try again.

It could be a mistake or that  particular download was not region restricted.

The embargo is still in place. I've just checked:

This product is not currently available due to region restrictions.

However, some material is not restricted so you got lucky.

Hi

I have managed to download a couple of Van Morrison albums from the site. It seems there are certain restriction on certain artists.  Its a little strange.

I have also heard people say that they have been able to download certain music if they use paypal, but not if they use their cards.

HD Tracks can detect if your email address is out side the States. I got around it once, by giving a proxy email address, and a home address in the States. I downloaded Hotel California in 96/24-bit FLAC, which blows my original CD out the water! But the second time, they Sussed me out!

As Harry says it just depends on the record label for each recording and the restrictions they place on HDTracks.

It really is ridiculous that some of the record companies are making it so difficult for us to give them our money.  Kind of explains why the industry is in such trouble when they are missing opportunities to let their customers buy their products.

My particular frustration this week is I had a happy workaround until a couple of weeks ago.  I had noticed that when at work my company's network is configured such that your IP address (which seems to be how HDTracks figures out your location) is a US registered one.  So happy days I could buy whatever I liked provided I paid with PayPal.  But now the network has been changed and I look like I'm in India :-(

Other than sharing my frustration I mention only so that others of you who work in global companies might check out what happens when you try HDT at work.

I did manage to get the Eric Clapton Crossroads recording this week from home - that one is not region restricted.

Happy Christmas everyone.

Since hdtracks.com have revamped their web shop there seems to be a different policy.

In the old shop the restrictions applied to an entire label, i.e. either all albums from Deutsche Grammophon were available or none.

In the new shop they seem to be able to apply more fine-grained restrictions: I could buy one album from Decca but another album from Decca was not available to me.

One way round the region restriction is to subscribe to a VPN provider.I use one and can download any available track from HDtracks.

I use Block My IP.

I thought it was about time I had a copy of The Velvet Underground And Nico, a glaring oversight on my part. Went through the process yesterday and double checked that the block was still active. It was.

Time was when you could avoid it by using PayPal but that's long gone.

If all else fails, long-time forum members can contact me.  I may be able to help from here, States-side.
