All Tracks - Randomly - How Hard Can It Be?

Posted by: Gavin B on 20 December 2013

I want to be able to open up nStream and tell it to play tracks at random from my Media PC running Asset.

I can't figure how to do it.

Creating a playlist in nStream involves doing it one song at a time and I seem to remember a limitation of something like 250 songs - not a practical solution (if it's one at all)

nStream will list all my songs, but I can't just press play.

The Asset listing has a playlist section with a few different (default?) lists, but again, I don't seem to be able to just press play.  It's random [Jukebox Track Selection] list would seem to be perfect, but I can't just play it.

Any suggestions?

Surely this must be a common request or need for streaming?

Thanks

Gavin

I can't do this with nStream but if you use the remote, select the folder 'All Tracks' and hit random then play it will play randomly all tracks on your NAS/server.

Like John3 I do it just using the remote for my SU - select all albums then all tracks then press random and then play (all on the remote - no need for Nstream). It always seems to play the same track first but press next track on the remote and it's all random from then on.

Only glitch is that after an hour maximum the display reverts to clock and you have to press display for those "who the heck is that?" moments. Saves farting around with tablets if you just want background music but random on my collection sounds eerily similar to Radio Paradise

Get a better UPNP server and use its relevant app.  JRiver and JRemote App come to mind.  Perfection.  Do ANYTHING you want.

Just tried from the remote and it works just like you say - thanks. Given that the structure that appears on the Qute's screen when using the remote is the same as in nStream, why isn't the simple play operation enabled there?

Hahahah... Yeah I also get that feeling when playing random tracks from my NAS. My wife keeps asking me... is this your music or are we listening to RP?

Gavin, if you are running Asset this is easy. within Nstream navigate to the Upnp Playlist directory. This is off the root directory, and then select Jukebox. You will get a random selection of tracks downloaded to your Naim network player. The size is selectable I seem to remember in the Asset config, but I I think I am right that if you have the 192/24 streaming boards they can store around 250 track links.

Hi,
Thanks for this remote control tip.
I used to listen more often than not random music on my sbt.
I now have it on my nd5.

Cheers scott

I can do this, and if I pick the [Jukebox Selection] I can see the random list of tracks that is selected (and I see where I can change the size within Asset) but how can I play it?  Just pressing play does nothing - there's nothing in the play queue.  Any suggestions?

I think that the remote control trick is only adding 500 tracks. You can do the same thing in nStream, click and hold the all tracks button and click play in the menu. Only 500 tracks are added to the current playlist however and it seems to be the same 500 if you try it several times.

Gavin,

ok go to the Playlists group folder.. This shows all the custom playlist types. Don't click into the specific playlist folder, but instead keep your finger on the playlist folder name such as Jukebox Track Selection, then a pop up appears, and select Play. Another pop up then appears saying getting tracks.. This is where your random playlist is loaded into the streamer.. When done it should be playing.. And you can skip backwards and forwards through the playlist...

Good luck

Graham - what's the All Tracks button in nStream?

Simon - Thanks, I'll give that a go this evening

That's basically my question.  How do you make sure it's not the same 500 tracks or not the same group of albums the 500 is selected from.  Bearing in mind I have nigh on 3000 CD's ripped to my NAS.
