Frustrated Newbie with an NDX

Posted by: Mr Magoo on 22 December 2013

Ladies and Gentlemen.

May I please ask for your assistance in configuring my new system.

Last Tuesday I took delivery of an NDX and SuperNait 2, these being my first Naim products. I also acquired a Synology  DS213J NAS.

It took until Friday afternoon with much time spent reading forum posts and 2 calls to the help desk before with considerable surprise The NDX streamed music from the NAS Previously and subsequently the NDX has stoically refused to see the NAS on my wired (via wall plug network) I learned along the journey that I needed to install the DS Audio software that was inbuilt in the NAS but even that didn't provide an instant solution and during the 4 hours it was streaming I was unable to configure N-stream on my iPad. With hindsight I shouldn't have ended the streaming session early on Friday evening as I haven't managed to re-start any form of streaming since.

The Synology appears on my laptop and is functioning as I can add ALAC files to it. I have tried an LG NAS (DLNA) but receive an error message saying unable to browse despite this having a substantial music folder. I have tried a WD NAS with music, video and photo folders populated but the NDX only offers the opportunity of browsing photos,  quite how it would display raises an interesting question!

I have tried moving the NAS drives around various ports on the router (BT Home hub 2) to no avail and have now run out of hair to tear out as well.

Please does any one have any suitable suggestions? Your help would be much appreciated.

First thing first. You need to have "Media Sever" running on the Synology. Not DS Audio. Can you check on this ?

Hi engjoo.

Thanks for replying I'm not sure how to check. I've certainly no recollection of enabling a media server but I can use the media indexing option in the control panel.

You should see it in the start menu of the web interface of the Synology. If it is not there you have to install it via the package center (or similar, my version is German ;-)).

When installing the media server you get three top level folders, music, pictures and videos. Put all you music files in the music folder and everything should work.

Hi Volker, thank you for your help.

I have a screen with several server options, DHCP, Directory, DNS, Git, Radius and VPN. I guess it's one of these that you're referring to but which one specifically acts ass the media server? I'm guessing DHCP?

No.  Open up the Package Center and enable the Media Server.

There is an icon for the Package Center right on the Synology web interface desktop.  Open it, go to the Multimedia tab, and enable Media Server.

Ahh, I made a screenshot for you just to see that one cannot upload images to the forum

No no, you are far too much in the system. Open the start menu. If the media server appears, everything should work, and I do not know what's wrong, sorry. But if it is not there, install it via "Package center".
Hope that helps!

Bart, It is with great embarrassment that I say  Thank you Very Much!

It's easy when you know how. I can only say that I must have looked at that Media Server icon several times and associated it with film rather than music.

Now that it's done I'll set to getting N-Stream up and running but already the music is sounding very good indeed.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to he answers. Enjoy the festivities one and all.

Enjoy the music!
