NDS input surprises

Posted by: KRM on 22 December 2013

I have recently taken delivery of an NDS and I am overwhelmed by the sound quality, which is a massive step up from the NDX/DAC/555, but there are a couple of surprises.

First is the USB input which is actually a USB/iPod input. That's what it's called and that's what it does (it even lets me run Spotify into the USB). This conflicts with the website, the manual and information from Naim on this forum, so have they enabled iPod compatabilty on the quiet?

The next thing is that there doesn't appear to be a multi-room input and, yes, I have looked in the setup menu. It's running 3.22 so does the input only appear if it detects another Naim streamer?

Magnus is correct.

Plug your iPod/iPad into the NDS and start to play some iTunes music. After a second or two, stop the music, open the Spotify app. and use as normal. It seems to work best if you do all of this from the iPad, not the front screen of the NDS, as the latter can get confused and may refuse to play.

It's not ideal, especially if you want to keep changing sources, but it works. I believe it will also work for other Naim streamers.

Love the Dr Strangelove analogy, by the way

That sounds like a "workaround" rather than the ability to play music off an iphone streaming spotify ?

Add an Apple TV or AirPort Express via optical into the NDS and your iDevice will play Spotify over AirPlay.  I tested with iOS7, but it worked with 6, too.  Sounds better than I expected, but not as good as from a Mac or Squeezebox via optical into the NDS.

It's a workaround that works.

I too have an Apple TV connected to the NDS via optical. It sounds great and is therefore suffices in most circumstances. The direct connection sounds better, but is less convenient.
