Any Synology Power Users?

I'm getting better SQ running my PC as a server using dbAsset, as compared to the Synology Nas's built in Media Server.
Has anyone tried something different than the built in media server In sinology to good effect?
MM - i am trying to set up synology NAS using synology Media Serve with US SSD. So far SSD cannot find the NAS, so have not been able to listen.
What SQ differences have you heard? Any hints on how you made your US (if you are using one) connect with the NAS?
Thx
Lars

Hi
Just a quick question. I use a Synology and haven't got any problems with quality. Is the box set to transcode? My UQ2 needed the transcoding turned off especially for HD stuff to work.

Lars - trying the following:
1. Set up a specific user name and password to acess files on your NAS.
2. Create a shared folder using the DSM interface on the Synology. Make sure you give read/write access to the user name you set up.
3. On the US - go to the network share option under system setup and add a network share. This would be the shared folder you created. Maker sure you add the user name and password you set up.
If all else fails, then send an express letter to Santa Claus, apologize for sending the letter after Xmas and ask for his help.
Good luck!

When I had a Synology I used Minimserver; unlike the Synology media server it can transcode hires.

I never had a problem with it transcoding HiRes. It just transcoded it to LPCM allowing me to play even 24bit 192kHz on my Sony bluray player. It even managed to transcode 5.1 HiRes surround. I can confirm that it kept the resolution as well due to the bitrate information the Sony displayed.
The UnitiQute doesn't really like LPCM though so I turned it off. I may have been able to do something clever to turn off transcoding just for the Qute but I was in a hurry to get it working so I just turned it off.

The reason I added the transcoding remark is because when Synology released DSM 4.x, transcoding was limited, or down sampled, to 16/44 wav output i.e. no hires transcoding. It worked great until DSM 3.x and this was the reason I seeked a new Upnp server. This "downgrade" was intentional by Synology as it allowed greater compatability with other Upnp clients, or so they told me.
Several other forum members discovered this issue as well.
Maybe it has been changed now; don't know as I'm not following Synology anymore.
FWIW, yo might soon be able to run Asset directly on your Synology (or QNAP), as it has been ported to Linux (Debian, originally). It needs to be an Intel-based NAS though. Asset seems to have some libraries dependency bugs on QNAP right now, but Spoon says they're making progress.
Once it works reliably, I guess you won't have to wait long before finding packages for Synology and QNAP.
I installed Minim Server on my PC the other day. I find it hard to believe, but I think my system sounds better with it than with the dbasset.
I'll have to do another test though - when I yank the cable from the NAS, music still plays for several seconds, indicating that the streamer is buffering data - so why server should matter is beyond me.
At this point,
Minim/PC > dbAsset/PC > MediaServer/Synology.
Need more time to test though - which I don't have. I was hoping to just use the synology as the upnp server, but that won't happen anytime soon - and I don't have the time to install Java on Synology to get MinimServer to work - I bought the Marvell processor based Synology by accident.
How is the sound better? Minim/PC sounds more relaxed than the dbasset/PC. Synology by itself isn't pratty enough.
Another thing I want to compare is running the servers on my pc and having files loaded from the nas vs. from the local harddrive.
None of which should matter, but it does. Maybe Naim streamers are junk - Or I just need to splurge on the Naim upnp Server.
