Can't add shares to a new UnitiServe-SSD.

Hi all,
I'm having a problem adding shares with a new UnitiServe. Via the desktop client when I "add new" under music repositories, scannable network shares I get an error that:
"The share was not added successfully, reasons for the failure are shown below. ......"
Followed by:
"PngHost: SocketException - the requested name is valid and was found in the database in the database, but it does not have the correct associated data begin resolved for"
Whilst I'm here, why oh why can none of the text in that dialog box be copied to the clipboard .
The desktop client is being run on windows 8.0 also, but from a seperate laptop and I get a similar error using the web ui.
I have two shares I'm trying to connect to, one is a Lacie NetworkSpace 2 the other on a Windows 8(.0) box. Neither require permissions to access. Both give the same error on the US.
The three devices and a UQ all have reserved IP addresses via DHCP and are on a wired connection to the same Linksys switch which is then connected to a Linksys router where the DHCP is.
The UQ can see the US and the PLEX server running on the Windows box. the Windows box can also see the US.
I've seen a few posts about DNS settings. does the US try to do a reverse lookup of itself? If so I would expect that to fail as there is no internal DNS. I'm on BT ADSL and noticed that the default auto-config of the Linksys put in the upstream DNs servers, rather than itself to then act as a forwarder. Is this related to the US issue I'm seeing?
both the US and UQ are on the latest software, fresh from the factory just before Chrimbo.
I've not yet tested the US with a static address as that will just make me very sad if Naim can't get an IP stack to work reliably, but I will do this am.
Any thoughts anyone? Random suggestions welcome!
