Mac Mini running asset for UPnP
Posted by: DF50 on 29 December 2013
I have just purchased a new Mac Mini as my UPnP server for my ND5, files on QNap NAS. I have Asset on the Mini at the moment, running niceley! Just wondered if there is anything I should be doing to the Mini to tweak, I am running headless, and because of no monitor, keyboard etc, do I need to tweak for that either?
i have no apps on there except for Asset - so is basically just OSX , and I slipped 8GB Ram and a 120GB SSD I had lying around! So anything else to do? Maybe because it's running headless?...
Thanks,
Dave.
Hi Dave
I have a Qnap NAS and a ND5 XS. I am looking for a new server, because the Twonky server bundled with the Qnap puts the metadata & artwork all over the place. How did you manage to get Asset on a Mac device? Tell me more!
David
Hi,
There is a beta version on Illustrate's site - it's been out for a few months, works great! The paid version is supposed to be released by end of January... Link to download below.
Dave.
If you have an Atom power Qnap then you should be able to install asset directly on it, hence bypassing the need for a Mac Mini entirely! There are discussions about this on the dbpoweramp forum...

Hi
It isn't an Atom power Qnap. I have the QnapTS-112.
Try this Dave,
Thanks Andrew - I will go through that article - thanks again, missed that!

I use bit perfect on my mini
similar tips also available from Amarra - http://www.sonicstudio.com/ama...owtobuildaserver.php
Awesome guys - thanks, good tips and other links on these articles!

These tweaks are worth doing if you are using the USB or Firewire outputs on the Mini otherwise just leave it alone when using it for UPnP duties.
Hi DF,
I am interested in the performance of Assett running on a Mac Mini. Please keep us updated on your findings ! Really appreciated

Asset works well - minimiserver is better on the Mac and can run on the QNAP.

Asset on OXS is still beta and has been for some months - the paid, out of beta version is supposed to be ready by end of January, so it is a mature beta...
As for how is runs - I have a friend that runs the Windows version, and has been for quite a while. I have been running the Mac beta version for a couple months, all beit on the new Mini for a week or so, we both agree there is no difference in quality of sound, which I didn't expect anyway! and the functionality is the same, as far as we can see.
Dave
Sorry OSX not OXS :-)
James n,
I was more interested in stuff I could switch off, that I May not of thought of, stuff not really needed with unnecessary overhead, as well as it be run headless!
Thank you.
Dave
Dave - there's not much to turn off that will make a difference in UPnP mode. I run my Mini headless (not running UPnP anymore though) and apart from disabling spotlight and setting the energy saver to the required settings to schedule power on and off nothing else needs to be done to optimise it in this mode.
Thanks James, thats what I figured - I did that stuff and switched of notifications, job done!
Thanks again,
Dave
Dave - forgot one thing. Turn off automatic software updates - you can check manually if needed.
James
Got that one too! Thats funny, just thought about that this morning - thanks for having my back!
My next job is to get a couple of rooms wired - put a switch and patch panel in cella, so that I can get the friggin NAS off my hifi rack, make room for that PSU when I can put the cash together! Shouldn't take long - just a couple of runs!

Sounds good... I may grab a copy of Audirvana myself to hear what it's like into my ND5 with an optical cable - not that I am not happy with what I have, but just wanted to check out what the DAC is like in my ND5 fed directly! Doesn't cost anything, what the heck! I've listened to the n-Dac and liked it, just want to see what my DAC is like in the streamer... shts n giggles. Hope the profanity is allowed!!!
