Why doesn't nStream include Track Search?

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 03 January 2014

nServe has a very effective track search, so why isn't this available in nStream? Most Naim users won't have nServe, and even if you do, it is a pain to have to swap between the apps to find something?

Is there any chance that the developers could include this in the next release of nStream? Pretty please?

It does have a Track Search capability - select your Track view that displays all Tracks in A-Z listing (in Asset it is called 'Titles' then [All Titles]), then pull down the window and you have a Search box, into which you can type your entry. This is n-Stream on iPad. It may be different on the iPhone app.

This works for all views - Artists, Albums, Composer etc. served by your UPnP server.

Simon.

Hmm. How do you get to track view in nStream?

Posted on: 03 January 2014 by ChrisH

Thats strange HH.

Dont you get the following selection options in nStream:

Albums/Artists/Playlists/Genres/Tracks/

Composers/Performers/Newest CDs/Last played/Top 20  ?

The views in n-Stream are dependent on the UPnP server, that is maintaining the database built from the metadata of the tracks.

What server are you using? Where are your Music files located?

Posted on: 03 January 2014 by ChrisH

That kind of makes sense Simes_pep, but

I have a NAS with Twonky and Unitiserve.

Regardless of whether the NAS is on I get the above 10 selection options in nStream.

HH has a US too, so I would have thought that the US as UPnP would have provided the same selection options for both of us?

Between genres and composers I have..... Nothing. Weird.

With HDX / US, in Desktop Client go to Tools, System Settings then select (under Allowable Music Views) Tracks=True.

The bad news is that if you have a lot of tracks it gets its pants in a twist and freezes your server !!  Naim developers - please note.

Posted on: 03 January 2014 by hungryhalibut

Ah, that's how to do it. I'll have a play tomorrow. With 2100 albums there will be quite a few.

I'm looking under All Music in nStream on iPad and I'm seeing:

Albums

Artists

Playlists

Genres

Tracks

Composers

Conductors

Performers

Newest CDs

Last Played

Top 20

DTC. I forget about that extra functionality and options. Thanks rjs.

Yes - as others have confirmed NStream definitely does have a track search (The Spyglass at the top of the right hand side index column) - and it works with partial matches - which is a godsend - I use it a lot - its a great feature on NStream.

Just remember if you have a large collection - wait for the green bar to completely go across the bottom the NStream screen when you move into Tracks or Artisits etc - otherwise you will search on only partially downloaded data from the UPnP server.

Well I'm blowed, it works! It did crash the iPad the first time I opened it in nStream but it seems to have settled down.

Thanks folks :-)

Out of interest, what is "Enable Index Feature" in A-Z Index Settings? It's the only other thing that's set to false apart from Transcode Media Types. Come think of it, what does the latter do? It can't be transcode "on the fly" as my UnitiServe is set to do this.

Thanks everyone, it works. It's odd that the feature is not turned on as a default.

Posted on: 04 January 2014 by ChrisH

I can't actually remember now what the defaults were, but after rjs had jogged my memory that the options could be changed in DTC, I remembered changing my list options in the web interface early on after I got the US (I removed composer from the list as with my lack of classical music it wasn't relevant).

I find the composer search really useful - a great way to scoop up all the Bach stored under various genres. It takes a while to load all the tracks, but now it's working, it's brilliant.

Posted on: 04 January 2014 by Harry

Yeah. It can be really useful. I'm using a fairly high proportion of search terms and playlists nowadays. But it's nice to have the whole collection back on view at the tap of a finger.

Has anyone out there enabled the "Enable Index Feature" and, if so, what does it do?

Some CDs have index points within them so you can go to specific points - my CDI had a display that showed, for example track 3.01, 3.02. Maybe it's that? You could always try it.

Thanks Nigel,

It's true, I could, but I'm a little nervous about buggering around with settings I don't understand.

Combining what Simon says with the comment of rjstaines, above, I infer that getting a track search option to work in nStream with a Naim server is fraught with difficulties. I have to say that I don't even see the spyglass in nStream which Simon refers to.

Posted on: 05 January 2014 by ChrisH

Clive, if you go to, say, Tracks in nStream, down the right hand side you have A to Z listed.

Above A you get the magnifying glass symbol.

But if youscroll upwards as far as you can go anyway, you will get the Search field appear.

Its really quite striaghtforward not fraught with difficulties.

Also as Simon says, works with partial search terms.

Just wait for the green bar to finish loading along the bottom before searching to make sure you are searching all info.

That's the strange thing though, I see that I am using app version 3.6.7479 with streamer version 3.17.00 yet cannot find 'Tracks' in nStream.  The green bar has loaded properly too. I do think a track search option would be a good feature to offer with Naim servers. Maybe as has been hinted at earlier it doesn't work with Naim servers. It seems odd though how the nStream app can appear and behave differently depending on the brand of server you choose and I am perplexed as to why the software engineers at Naim Audio would offer this feature on one brand of server, but not on its own.

Posted on: 05 January 2014 by hungryhalibut

Now I have option activated, it's easy peasy. If you flick the track list down, the big white search field appears. It works very effectively, as you enter the letters the results reduce until you see what you want. I have over 25,000 tracks, and found the one I wanted in a couple of seconds.

It's certainly not  'fraught with difficulties' - once activated of course.

Posted on: 05 January 2014 by hungryhalibut

Clive, it does work with Naim servers. Enable the feature in the DTC, as Mr Staines explained to me above.

Is it necessary to be using a streamer which is configured to the latest standard, which I believe is 3.22? Do I need to send my NDS back to have that mod done first?
