Why doesn't nStream include Track Search?
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 03 January 2014
nServe has a very effective track search, so why isn't this available in nStream? Most Naim users won't have nServe, and even if you do, it is a pain to have to swap between the apps to find something?
Is there any chance that the developers could include this in the next release of nStream? Pretty please?
I can't help there, as I'm using 3.22, and the track search works. If you want to do the change to 3.22, you download the files to a PC and connect a wire to the USB mini B socket on the back of the NDS. There are threads explaining this in more detail.
Have you enabled the track search in the desktop client, as explained above?
You can check if 'Tracks' has been activated in both Desktop client or the Web interface Clive, whichever is more convenient.
? Web interface? What's that?!
I'm going to have a go at the 3.22 modification later if I can find a suitable connecting lead. Then, if that works I'll have a go at track search.
Records and CDs are so much easier!
On a similar query. I have noticed on my n-Stream that the search method to the right of the screen shows just a long column of dots whereas in n-Serve I can see althabetical letters for quick album or artist location.
Is this the case for others?
Jason.

"Web interface" refers to Desk Top Client (DRC).
OK, stick with Desktop Client then
But before you do the update, just check in DTC as mentioned above to see if the track search option is enabled - it might save you the hassle of the update.
O dear, Jason, your world is not as it should be! I see a list of letters down the right, for albums, artists, tracks and the rest. I'm using an iPad, are you?

Not so. The web interface is a black and green graphical interface. You get to it by typing the name of the server into the web search bar - eg NSSRVxxxx, where xxxx is the last four digits of the server's name.
The DTC is entirely different - you download it from Naim and it then sits on your desktop.
A crumb of comfort is that the DTC seems easier to use, and there are some things that you cannot do via the web interface.
I think the change from the dots to letters ocurred with a change to the App or Streamer Version.
I get the letters on iPod Touch and iPad.
My nStream settings tell me:
Streamer Version: 3.22
App Version: 3.6.7479
Are your versions the same Jason?
(I have SU and US, as does HH. Not sure if this makes a difference)
I have the A-Z links down the right side of the Tracks list and the search bar at the top. Does this have anything to do with the streamer firmware since indexing functions are carried out by the server?
In the case of the HDX there is a web interface, which is a Flash representation of the front touch screen and the Desktop Client which is where you have the deeper levels of configuration. I can also feed the HDX front screen to the AV input of a telly and use the remote. I don't know if you can set these kind of things up in nServe, I haven't looked. I use mainly the Desktop Client. Don't know precisely how much of this applies to something like a US but I assume the Desktop Client is the same.
Well I've upgraded the NDS firmware to version 3.22.003 and still I don't see a track search option, so I guess I shall have to investigate the DTC system settings next. But that will have to wait for another day - I fear I might have exhausted my supply of good luck for one day in getting a flawless installation of the firmware update. Having read of the problems others had faced in attempting the firmware update I was anxious to say the least - hence my delay until now. But hey ho, it works!
Well done! Upgrading the firmware is miles more complex than enabling tracks in the DTC. Go on, have a go......
Tomorrow, HH, tomorrow!
Currently celebrating the firmware success with Steven Wilson's 'Raven' at rather high levels! Need to play a guitar next, getting a bit twitchy!

Hi Nigel,
I thought this may be the case as I wrote it...but went with it anyway and fully expected to be corrected in due course So clearly I have never used the Web interface (but I have seen it), what is the purpose of this over the DTC?
Hmmmm, I really think there should be some consolidation here. I have said this before, but surely n-Serve and n-Stream can be combined into one app as there is already approx 80% duplication in function?
I understand that DTC is necessary for specific server management functions, so what's with the WB interface?
Jason.
I know, it's a nightmare. It really can't be that hard to consolidate the apps and have a simple set of instructions. At the moment it's more of a mutual self help thing.

Okay, just got back from playing an obscure Italian card game called 'Cucu' (In Norwegian; Gnav)..it's a tradition in this family.
Chaps,
So now it makes sense...seems I am on an older firmware on my u-Serve and have yet to upgrade...boy am I way behind. I will tackle this little devil next week as I am anticipating some casual arm wrestling and much cursing.
Where would one be without life's little helpers?
Jason.
p.s. Am using the IPad with up to date n-Stream so seems to be my non updated u-Serve as Harry points out.
Using Squeezebox Media Server I am not able to access track search on N-stream on the IPad. I can search artists and albums. Hmmmm
Using Bubble Upnp on my Android Phone, it breezes into the LMS and picks out the tracks. Now I just need to get Bubble to change sources on my Qute.....
