2014 F1 Season.

Not too good a start with what had happened to Schumy.

There is also even sadder news with the announcement of engine builder Brian Harts passing.

Sad news indeed about Brian Hart. I've worked in aviation with some of his ex-employees, and they had very fond memories of him, the company, and great times.

RIP Brian Hart.

Another sad news. Jenson Button's father, John, has died suddelnly of a heart attack at the age of 70.

R.I.P

At bloody last:

Bernie has stepped down as a Director also now is running F1 on a day to day basis.

Martin is probably on gardening leave by now.

Ready for Ross Brawn to come in when he's allowed to...

Eric Boullier has quit Lotus & the news wires are alive with a transfer to McLaren to replace Martin Whitmarsh.
McLaren refused to confirm or deny either Whitmarsh's departure or Boullier's arrival ............. usually a sure bet that something is going on

And judging by the pictures from Williams and McLaren, they're going to be sending out Forumla 1 style 'Anteaters' onto the track this year...

Wow. Yes. That's ugly. I guess there's a rule that the wing can't be in front of the nose, or some such.

On the other hand I just love the insane complexity of the front wings. The sophistication of the design process for the aerodynamics is evident.

It doesn't seem possible that such a collection of little vanes and winglets could be optimum. It is almost as if once you add an element, you aren't allowed to remove it - all you can do is add another one to make up for the first mistake.

They look fine on side view but the narrowness of the nose is awkward. One concern I have is the tightness of the package around the driver. Definitely is easier for the smaller driver especially given overall weight restrictions.

I thought they could easily build to the minimum weight restriction and used ballast in the floor to keep the c.o.g. low. Big guys like Webber ran less ballast and therefore had a slightly higher c.o.g. which is a small disadvantage. But the same overall weight. I guess big guys lose more fluids in the race so perhaps start a little heavier than small guys, too. The weigh-in is at the end - car, clothing, helmet and driver, but no fuel as I understand it.

You're right that the area for legs looks to be as small as possible (for aero reasons?). Perhaps another advantage going to the "jockeys".

They used to be able to, but the new 'power trains' are much heavier than the plain old engines of before.

A bit different from McLaren's "hooter" approach  but just as ugly!

Well, to me, the last good-looking F1 cars were around 1995, before silly winglets etc started to be glued onto every surface. So the '14 cars are no uglier than the last few years of aero excercises.

Give me a 1993 Ferrari any day!

For example, a 1994 Ferrari 412 T1. To me, beautiful.

Gordon's

or Adrian's?

The MP4/4 will always be my favourite but that's just  me!

It's Got To Be Gordon's!
Posted on: 24 January 2014 by Tony Lockhart
I've just read that Gordon Murray only assisted in the design. That surprised me.

Tony,,

His input must have been huge and that was a truly great car!

One of the greatest cars, and so successful. Fantastic.

So many delicate bits to be taken out at the inevitable first corner car nage...

The front wing is narrower than last year's to try and reduce overall downforce, and make it less susceptible to collision damage.

Agreed. And in the perfect color for a race car!

Only if you are Italian?

Mclaren MP 4/4 is one of my non real Lotus faves. Maybe a Lotus 49 or 79.

Thankfully I take F1 cars, teams and drivers on their own merits. Nationality has little to do with it, especially in such an international sport.

So, for 2014, Ferrari have gone for the Dyson look...
