2014 F1 Season.

Not too good a start with what had happened to Schumy.

There is also even sadder news with the announcement of engine builder Brian Harts passing.

Massa retires with immediate effect over team orders. Shame:

I hear he's being replaced by a female driver, April, the first woman F1 driver of the modern era.

Spot on.

Blimey! Have i just seen some proper neck-a-neck racing? Well done Mercedes with another 1-2.

This is rubbish they really must change the rules!  NOT.

Classy driving by Lewis, slower harder tyres and held off his team mate on the softs.

Jo Palmer also won in GP2.

Brilliant - Nice that the team let them go at it.

What would have happened if no safety car?  Wasn't it a bit of a procession again at that point?

Would not competitive racing mean more than one team with a chance of winning?

I don't understand how such a leap in technology was meant to deliver a more competitive series. When the technology matures then teams catch up and margins get smaller. Big changes such as they have done was only ever going to create a more uneven playing field for a good while. Big rule changes favour rich teams. I reckon they should have the confidence to not fiddle for a bit or they will be losing teams from the grid as well as fans.

Is there any sign that actually driving these new cars is more exciting or difficult? I've not watched any-my F1 interest wanes exponentially.

Big rule changes always throws a spanner in the works and can have the effect of upsetting the natural order, assuming there's been no massive changes in the previous few years.

I don't put much stock in results post major rule change, not until there's been a period of stability.

Given a longish period of stability, the cream always rises to the top.

Anyway, nice to see a Tyrrell 1-2...

F1 has a new kid on the block.

FIA has approved a team from USA led by NASCAR team boss Gene Haas

Not sure how he intends to do this as it is not gonna be easy

- new teams struggle to make any impact in their 1st few years.

- finding drivers will be tough

- quality design & engineering staff in the numbers required even harder. Having a team in USA is a long way from the bulk of the talent in England. My guess he will find it easier to base in UK/Europe.

I guess its watch this space.

Money talks, so how much does he want to spend? NASCAR isn't the greatest background for delicate single seaters, I'd have thought. Let's see, I suppose.

Thankfully:

Good news me thinks ......... it smacks as tail wagging dog, throwing toys around  & threatening to not play (like the other red team in the past) doesn't cut the mustard

They might not agree with the FIA sensors,  they might have found reliability issues, they might have found their own sensor/measuring disagrees, but the clincher was they were told during the race that DR was using too much fuel & they choose to do nothing.

More gnu's

Stefano Domenicali has quit as team principal of Ferrari with immediate effect.  Marco Mattiacci, currently president & CEO of Ferrari North America takes over.
Stefano says the disappointing start to the season, with neither Alonso or Raikkonen on the podium is the reason,   He says he takes responsibility, ".... as I have always done, for our current situation ......... there are special moments that come along in everyone's professional life when one needs courage to take difficult and very agonising decisions. It is now time for a significant change.  ........  the decision has been taken with the aim of doing something to shake things up .............. "

R.I.P. Jack.

Posted on: 19 May 2014 by BigH47

R.I.P. indeed Jack, one of the few remaining characters of the sport.

Aussies seem to have just the right amount of irreverence to suit the stuffy F1 system.

First and only IIRC man to win the World Championship in a car bearing his own name.

Monaco qualifying was a real anticlimax & its ended up with some bad vibes

Lots of incidents & some busy stewards - the most notable was Rosberg went off at Mirabeau on the very last lap of Q3 & it bought on yellow flags & Hamilton had to back off spoiling his lap & possibly getting P1 from Rosberg.  It is to be investigated, meaning LH could have a chance of getting P1.

The way I see it,  NR lock up & running wide at Mirabeau was OK, the car stopped in a safe position, but his timed lap attempt was now gone-done-finished-over.  problem was he reveresed back out onto the track. This put the car in a road hazard position = yellow flags.

The stewards questions as I see it -

1 was it deliberate - not sure what the penalty is but it could be more serious than a pit start

2 was it an error of judgement & if so does that justify a penalty & what should that be.

Mercedes have been summonsed to give their views of the event

More to come

A move worthy of Schumi in his prime...

Posted on: 24 May 2014 by rodwsmith

The Mercedes team did increase their Champagne order with us by another 80 bottles about an hour ago.

So, unless it's to placate Nicole, they can't be too upset at the qualifying outcome...

Posted on: 24 May 2014 by Mike-B

I guess the Mercedes catering dept are not talking to the Race Team

They are still with the stewards

Indeed Jamie - its a repeat of Sumi's 'Rascasse-gate' scandal

The team rivalry seems to be on the verge of going off the rails

LH was seething & about as speechless as I've ever seen him
