2014 F1 Season.

Not too good a start with what had happened to Schumy.

There is also even sadder news with the announcement of engine builder Brian Harts passing.

NR has been cleared

Race stewards said they could find "no evidence of any offence".

SpecSavers comes to mind

Roll on the first corner tomorrow

I didn't see it - but I hope that it was deliberate - even if they can't prove it.

Asked about comparisons with Prost and Senna, Lewis said he '...liked the way Senna dealt with it'. Yep that first corner will have a lot of cameras on it...

Fantastic result for Caterham, 11th & 13th!

Brilliant atmosphere. Terrible race. Well, not a race at all.

But brilliant atmosphere!

Actually there were moments when the atmosphere was less brilliant:

But they're so quiet. Unbelievably quiet. No ear plugs needed at all, and you could have a conversation with them passing right by. Just not right.

I went a few years ago and accidentally had the plugs out when they went past, and it felt like my ears had started to bleed and my head was about to explode.

Jim Bamber famous for his F1 cartoon/caricatures in Autosport has passed away. He died from cancer at 66 years.

R.I.P. Jim, always the first thing to look at was his pics in Autosport.

That's sad. He also did rallying cartoons. Too young to go in his mid-60s, but it seems to be quite a common age at the moment.

Interesting grid for tomorrow. Should make a good start at the very least.

What was LH thinking?

Didn't matter in the end...

Good performance from Bottas and Raikkonen was verrrrry lucky.

I don't think he was!

......but he was on Sunday. Shame we didn't get the head to head, but much better for Lewis' championship chances.

So pleased for Williams and Bo77as. I hope they can keep the momentum to get to 3rd in constructors and 4 the in WDC

So the next stupid FIA idea is out, 18" wheels. Oh goody perhaps some could fit 22'' ones with spinners maybe some lights under the cars?

Most (all) of a F1 cars suspension is actually the flexing of the sidewalls so the high profile tyres are vital to the design.

Of course it won't cost anything to change to 18" rims, like the change in engine regs did increase costs?

Does anyone know if worldwide audiences are slipping for F1?

I just sense that people are nowhere near as interested as they were. I'm surely not.

Germany and Italy are losing audiences, oooo I wonder why, uk audiences are increasing.

Howard. I think the current 13" wheels look stupid now. Try and find any half decent car with smaller than 15" wheels now! Pirelli's Hembury reckons 19 or 20" is the way to go. And, if that means less give in the sidewalls, they'll just make the suspension control it. I'm sure a designer of F1 chassis would rather deal with carbon fibre than rubber, what with its changing properties during a race.

However. We shall see what Lotus and Pirelli think after tomorrow.

I don't see the problem. It's been done before!

Posted on: 08 July 2014 by Bruce Woodhouse

Caterham Seven handles best on 14 inch wheels. Chapman knew a bit about reducing unsprung weight. Modern big rims/lowprofile tyres are generally fashion over function. The proportions of current F1 cars already look so wrong they cannot possibly get worse unless they choose to have all 4 wheels different sizes. Not even Bernie could do that.

Yep. And that's why I go to the Brands' Masters Historic meeting, and watch them racing flat out. Great stuff. Not enough room for company logos though

I agree that most cars currently running 18" or larger wheels are doing it just for looks, but I've heard designers say they're relieved that alloy wheels are so cheap now, otherwise the brakes required to haul today's lard-barges down from motorway speeds would have nowhere to fit. Not a problem the Caterham has!

Agreed. Are there any other classes that run tyres as odd as F1? Where the car designers are allowed latitude, they choose larger wheels and lower-profile tyres. Much better for the suspension to do the work, rather than the sidewalls (up to a point, of course - you need some compliance in the tyres).

Apart from reduced sidewall deformation, the other advantage is that you can get big brakes in them.

No I'm sorry it's not a fashion item. Only 14' on my Mazda just like the Caterham.  Most modern sports cars especially have much to big wheels. Road cars of course have proper suspension, no need to keep a level and constant body to road gap, for the aerodynamics.

Yet another solution to a non-existent problem.
