New NDX Issues - Answers required.

Posted by: Tice7 on 08 January 2014

Just before Christmas I took delivery of an NDX and 555PS which I love but I have a few questions.

  1. Prior to getting the NDX, my iPod 120GB (which is almost full) was so sluggish that there was a delay of up to 10 seconds between using the interface wheel and any activity. Since using it (very briefly) with the NDX it now reacts instantly. Any idea why?
  2. N-stream doesn’t seem to be the most stable app and so far I’ve had to delete and re-install it 4 times on my iPad because it’s failed to respond. Reinstalling solves the problem but is this the norm?
  3. The NDX has frozen a couple of times when tuning iRadio. Switching the power supply off and on solves this but again, is this the norm?
  4. With an Asset NAS and n-Stream  in UPnP compatibility mode, playlists made with Playlist Creator 3.6.2 don’t show the album artwork for any tracks playing. Can this be fixed or is it just an issue that one has to live with?
  5. Finally, it’s possible to listen to various Radio 2 shows on listen again via the NDX iRadio. Any idea why The Bob Harris Sunday Show is excluded but the country show is available?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nice source, Tice !   Since no-one else has answered you yet, here's my offering:

1. Magic

2. No

3. No

4. Live with it (till you get a unitiserve)

5. Check with the BBC

That probably didn't help much, but it's something to be getting on with for now...

Regarding 3, this happened to me at a time when the internet radio was having problems.

if you fix the IP address on the streamer and NAS, the system will be more stable.

i tried fixing the ip, and fell out with it, turned auto back on.

it turned out that my wives iPhone had the always connected box checked, i that screwed with things.

2 iphones, 2 ipads in the house, they all are used at some point, stay connected was the culprit! or at least turning it off increased stability.

Having the app always connected is nothing to do with fixing the IP address though.

I tried fixing the ip and yes it works but I cannot say it is any more or less stable at least in my case but what is irritating is everytime a firmware update is done, everything including the network settings are reset to factory and that includes the customisation of the source name which I had put some effort on. In the end, I have kind of given up customising the NDX.

An observation on 4, NStream works best with Asset when NOT in computability mode; i.e. full mode. (unless you have issues with your home LAN). I am not sure if it will affect your issue however - but any presentation of album art is down to the UPnP server, Asset, so you might be best raising your query on the Asset forum. Thats not a Naim matter.

Thanks for the replies. It would appear that the instability is quite common and the consensus is that fixing the ip is a lot of effort for no real return. I have “Stay Connected” switched off anyway.

With regard to UPnP compatability mode with Asset, I use because it gives me access to a sort of random play with Jukebox Track Selection. Maximum of 1600 tracks at any one time but more than enough for any listening session. I also use it for playlists because in standard mode, I’ve lost my playlists every time I’ve had to reinstall n-Stream which is very irritating. I’ll ask the question re artwork on the Asset forum, thanks for the suggestion.

Why does the fast forward/fast rewind option on the handset only work with system automation? Surely the signal goes to the NDX.

Have a chat with your dealer. You have spent a large amount of money that has support costs built in and they have a responsibility to ensure that everything is working for you.
